Hi all! My new Rebel XTi Camera just arrived 1/2 hour ago, but some of the things that were supposed to be in the package weren't there, and there were things that I had no idea I was getting in the box. Can anyone take a look at what I got/didn't get and tell me if I got a better/worse deal and whether I should call them and see about the missing pieces or what?

This was the original eBay auction I ordered from (I had to call in because I'm in Canada). I gave them the auction ID so that they could bring up the items in the kit.

BUT instead of the 18-55 lens, they sent me a 28-70 F2.8-4 lens. Is this a better lens? worse? comparable? Am I going to be missing out on any photo needs because I don't have the kit lens?

Also, instead of sending me Canon lenses, they sent me Sigma lenses. Is Sigma good?

They also did not send me the Pro Wide Angle lens. Instead, I got 2 identical UV filters. (58mm high resolution UV Filter is what it says on the box).

And instead of 1 x 4gb Compact flash card, they sent me a 2gb and a 1gb.

Please help and give me advice!!

I dont think it's a $1100 lens. The box just says 28-70mm F2.8-4 DG.

That lens is WAY better than what you were supposed to get. The kit lens is, quite frankly, a piece of crap that any half-serious photographer should rid themselves of as soon as financially possible.

You lucked out in that respect.

The Sigma 28-70 f/2.8-4 DG is $129 at B&H.

This is not a good deal, and it's not an honest one. I, for one, would never want a 28-70 lens instead of the 18-55. A great deal of my shooting is at 18mm, both indoors and landscape. That's what was advertised in the auction.

The 70-300 Sigma lens may be better than the 70-300 Canon, if it's the 70-300 APO DG. If not APO, it's not a very good lens.

they have a 7 day return policy, however it's a PITA to send things back and forth across the border. It'd likely cost me $30+ out of my own pocket to return the stuff that was incorrect.

they probably have a sigma lens package as well as the canon package you ordered. They more than likely just sent out the wrong package.

I honestly don't know if its worth spending the $30 to ship the items back. If the company is good, they'll pay for return shipping because it was their mistake after all.

Only problem is you dealt off ebay so the only record of the actual details of your purchase is in their hands. You can't just look back at the auction info to help strengthen your case.

Good luck though...don't roll over too easy.

If that was me,Id be choked on paying 30$ to send it back but would do it
try to get them to reimburse it
personally Id MUCH prefer canon lenses and you should get what you ordered.

GOOD LUCK!

I have the older non-DG version of this lens I picked up for $60-70 some time back. Its not a bad starter lens though its fairly prone to lens flare. But I'd say the the Canon 18-55mm kit lens is going to be much more useful on the XTi.

My advice, for what that is worth, is call the vendor, get the RMA, ship it all back to them for a refund (goods not significantly as described), then leave negative feedback.
They are either incompetent or crooks. You may be stung for the shipping each way, and also <gasp> a 5% restock fee. :(

I would have to agree with a lot of other posts here. I know it may be a PITA and it may cost $30 but I would send it back. You certainly are not getting what you paid for.
