I want both of these lenses, but can't afford both right now, I'm also getting a 100mm 2.8 Macro.

So...for weddings and portraits, which of these two would be more useful? I'm afraid the 30 might be too short for portraits but I've seen some great pictures taken with that lens.

The 30 is awesome. I had both the 30 and 50 1.4 at the same time. The 50 never touched my camera after I got the 30 so I sold it. The 30 is sharper too. They are pretty close in length so I'm going for a 30 and 85 1.8 setup. I think that would be perfect!

I would go for the 50 f1.4, I had a lot of problems with the Sigma not focussing properly whereas the 50 is bang on every time.

I would say the 50 for portraits on a 40D. Next best thing to 85mm on a 5D.:)

I borrowed a 30 F1.4 and found it not to be sharp or focus accurately. The lens has a reputation for needing to be calibrated even when brand new, but after that it's meant to be good. My 50 1.4 improved after calibration too, possibly beacuse they also replaced something inside the lens - some gearing thing.

Thanks for the comments. Does the 30mm focal length work for portraits then? I'm thinking more for fully body shots, and I'd use the 100mm 2.8 for portraits as well.

I owned the 50 1.4, and currently own the Sigma 30 1.4. I find them pretty much the same optically, with a slight edge to the 30mm wide open. If I had a FF camera I would go with the 50 1.4, but with a 1.6 crop, for me, it's gotta be the Sigma 30mm - It's a great lens, and mine is sharp as a tack!

Take you sigma 28-70, lock yourself onto 30mm and see what you've got ;) It all depends on available room, but I find that it is perfect for portraits.

30mm will be okay for full length portraits, but I much prefer the perspective of a longer focal length - it's really a matter of personal taste. 30mm on a crop body would be the widest I would ever want to go.
