going from the 20D to the 40D was like going from a 13" tv to a bigscreen :) I would take the 3" anyday over the 2" or the 2.5 either

i dont see use for Live View in what i do. (mostly weddings and nature/outdoor)...it seems like they added LiveView for people used to low-end consumer cameras...like just a come-on feature, but not really usefull if you actually end up buying it, because liveview is made for holding the camera out in front of you to take a pic...i guess thats ok if you arent using a battery pack or nice/heavy lens and external flash. hmm, not trying to dis or anything, just racking my brain for when i might use live view, and cant think of a situation.

I can see where it might come in handy for Live View (haven't tried it yet), but my initial impression is that it's overkill. I thought the 2.5" screens on my 1DMKIIN and 5D were perfect. The 20D screen was a bit small, but still usable. The 40D screen is just too big.

Live view is very useful for landscape work, especially under low light conditions.

For me it is not about the pixel peeping. It is more about being able to read the menu and information displayed.

Gee, you really need your 20D back!
Please get one, otherwise you’ll be bashing every single 40D feature, including the badge..
Yeah, really, why does it have that pesky number 40 on it, 20 was much better!

It's great for movie playback! ;)
What it really needs is higher-resolution. IMHO, Canon should've atleast upped the res like what Nikon did with the d300.

The LCD is a great size to use for changing settings instead of the small screen on the top.

I don't own a 40D, but I've had a gaggle of compacts, so I know Live View well!

With my compacts, I would normally use the viewfinder, even if they were 1) Not full image or were 2) Electronic. Maybe it's habit, but it just seemed I had better control or something. The exception is my present pocket compact with no viewfinder:( but on a pocket camera, no big deal.

My coolest LCD feature is on my S3 IS (now malfunctioning but seldom picked up) -- the fold-out feature. That was great for things like low down closeups and high-up things like crowd scenes -- I could put it on a monopod, stick it above my head, frame a shot of, say, a stage, and then the timer would click the shot.

So, I don't have anything against Live View. It would be nice if it cooperated with auto-focus (Nikon has ways of doing this). I suppose my most frequent use would be tripod landscapes and macros. Certainly not for wildlife or sports. Normally I'd probably still use the viewfinder. If I had it. Which I do not. For Now:)!

Try to take a shot of a baby crawling in the grass. If you like to shoot on your belly, then you are in luck.

Same goes for taking pretty much any shot from near ground-level.

And how tired did I get of people whining about 'no AF in Live View'. It's there... It's not fast, but it is accurate.

I love the 3" LCD. How many people have a 40D, and a 20D wish they both had the 1.8" screen? I've got both, and I wish they both had a 3" screen. If you find it distracting while you are shooting, disable the automatic review.

It may not be "high resolution", but it's pretty damn good. No complaints here.

Live view on a 40D is quite different than that on a P&S.

In the case I mention it is often difficult to get good focus either with AF or by eye through the viewfinder but quite easy with live view. Moon shots are another good use for it.

I love it!

Especially to be able to zoom into a shot and pick out an area that I want to get perfect focus on.
