With all the talk of the 40D, the new MK III models and a possible 5d replacement where does that leave the XTi. Do you think they will update it (not that it is over the hill) or will they keep it as is for a few more years. Maybe more fps and 1/3 stops for ISO......you know a couple of little things.

Still has another year in it IMO. The features are good and the price is right. Golden rule i think canon have learned is that if its not broken, dont fix it.

They've been on an 18 month product cycle for Digital Rebels. I believe I saw that they may be moving to a 12 month cycle though. So yes, obviously they're going to update it.

I like the table in the link below because it shows when new models have came out in the past. Of course it doesn't predict the future, but it does give you an idea of what might happen. By looking at that you can see that the rebel line seems to have a 18 month life cycle and therefore an update to the XTi might be out around the 2nd quarter of 2008.

Personally, I feel the 40D is the update.

The 40D is an upgrade but not an "updated" XTi.

I was just curious to see if you all thought that they will upgrade it. There will come a point where if they continue to upgrade it it will be out of the price range it was designed to be in.

I would say the 400D will be updated in Sept 08. Maybe summer, but Sept is my bet. And the the 40D is not the replacement for the 400D like the 30D was not the replacement for the 350D.

Not at all, one of the benfits of upgrades is there is more for the dollar, the 400D proved that as does the 40D.

I really wonder what they would do to "upgrade" it?

I think it will forsure have a 3" LCD. Even if it makes the buttons on the back tiny (like on my Sony H5)

Live view????

12mp??

I guess as long as it's in a small plastic body ?

That is what I am wondering. I would hate to see a 3" screen on it, it is tight enough. Digic III, 5 fps, maybe live view......and they need to keep the small body.

For what its worth, they still have to compete w/ Nikon's worthless D40 and include a much better LCD screen, better on-board processing software for all the newbies flocking from the P&S cameras as well as keep it at a low price point. Like it or not, people do compare the two even though the XTi is light years away from the D40.

And it has to have Auto ISO! The real thing! Or, some people will have a fit:)!

I wouldn't be surprised if the 400D\Xti replacement is announced Feb this year alongside the 5D replacement. All cameras will then be DIGIC III at least. It's a fearce market at the lower end and I'm sure the competion is taking a lot of potential sales away from Canon. Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony etc.. now have very competative products
