This isn't really a business question, but I thought it was a good place to pose this. I'm entering an combined painting / photography contest. The instructions are:

"Entries are limited to 1 piece, 24 x 36 max, including frame plus two portfolio pieces"

I'm new to this, and I don't know what a portfolio piece is. Do they simply need two additional copies of the framed photgraph? They've asked me to price each also, if that helps. Thanks for your help.

hmmm, sort of begs the question doesn't it. If I had no way to contact them and specifically ask what they mean, I would guess portfolio pieces are additional photos you have done to help qualify you (and your entry) as legitimate. ??? Just my guess...

What I've always considered a portfolio piece is a printed piece worthy of my portfolio. I'm not sure I understand what they're looking for. I would definitely ask for some clarification.

Maybe loose unmounted?

I agree - I've tried but this is s small arts group and I haven't been able to connect with them.

ANSWER - Since I finally was able to contact them, I thought I'd post the answer -- They are looking for two matted or mounted pieces (unframed) which will be placed in rack for sale. Kind of like those bins you see in art stores full of photos or posters.
