Next friday, my Rebel XT will be my friend's new camera. I have made up my mind that I will be picking up a 40D the same day or next day. So I am wondering if anyone would be so kind to help me out with the following questions:

1. Where I can find the best legitimate deals (in-store or online)?
2. Any known rebate or coupons I can get?
3. Is it worth my while to get the kit or just the body and buy my own lens?
4. If you recommend I get the body only, does the body-only package come with everything the kit comes with MINUS the lens?
5. Any other buying advice you care to provide.

By the way, manufacturers warranty is very important to me, so gray market is not an option.

Thanks so much, in advance!

Ron

1. Usually the best deals do not come from in-store. I can usually always find items cheaper online. Check B&H, Amazon, Newegg.
2. Not unless you can get a Dell coupon before the end of the night (probably already too late as I think Dell is more towards the east coast)
3. Never used it personally, but I have read that the kit lens with the 40D is actually decent. Not great, but decent. If not, check out the Tamron 17-50.
4. Body only comes with everything but the lens.
5. Put in some time a do your research before buying. Steer well away from the "to good to be true" deals, as the usually are scams.

Type in the name of the store you are considering or select from the list.

I just got mine from Buydig.com and they're great. I think $1299 is the mean price just about everywhere, though. I got the body only (along with the 50 mm f/1.4 to compliment my 17-40L and 70-200L) and everything was in the package except for the lens.

If you are looking online and see offers for body only sales, check the seller's rating! Very important, as some of the not-so-good ones will sell just the body. And then charge you extra for battery, charger, etc.
A reputable dealer will list what is in the box.
Or so I have found.
Good luck - I love my 40D.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I don't want to start another 40d thread. I'm in the same situation. I currently have a Canon g6 and been wanting to get a dslr for a while now. But I wasn't sure whether to get the body only or to get it with the lens. I know nothing about lenses. I actually just started reading the book of "Understanding Exposure." I pretty much just started learning all this.

I was looking at that Tamron 17-20 but damn they're expensive. If I were to get a different lens, is there something a little cheaper than that? I'm not sure what kind of lens to get either for what I take pictures of. I don't really take pictures of sports if that makes any difference, just mainly of my son and family.

Canon 40D w/ kit lens 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6. No Flash, No lights, No other lenses. Just starting out.

Since you have no lenses to start with you might want to spring for the 40D with kit lens. The kit lens is a pretty nice lens and would work great for you family photos.

It will give you time to learn about lenses and what you like to shoot so you can buy the right glass down the line. The kit lens sells here for about $325-$350 so you could recoup some cost down the line.

Agreed, but there are two kit lenses (or maybe 3) available on the 40D: the 18-55, the 17-85 and the 28-135.

I wouldn't be happy with the 28-135, it's not wide enough for much of my indoor or landscape shooting.

Back to the OP's question. A member in another thread said yesterday that he bought his 40D from Circuit City with a 10% AAA discount. I don't know how one gets this discount - just show them your card like in a motel?

What I hear ---

EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 15th!

AAA members can access 10% savings on their purchases by visiting www.AAA.com/circuitcity (external link) and requesting a promotional code, which will be e-mailed to the member.
In many cases, members will be able to apply their 10% savings on top of existing Circuit City® sales offers, which translates to even greater savings.

The promotional code can be used on purchases of at least $199 online or via Circuit City's® toll free number: (800) 593-4391. While members can also receive the savings at all 630 retail locations, the program will not be promoted this way initially because Circuit City® cannot accept the AAA membership card as the way to receive the discount.

If you can get a 17-85 as a kit lens I would definitely go for that over the 17-55 kit. It's a better lens. Better yet would be a 17-55 f/2.8 IS, but that would be some kind of a dream kit, and I'm wide awake:)!

That came from my sometimes-feeble memory. Make that 17-55, I guess. Except that until recently nobody in the US was able to get anything but the 28-135, right?
