I'm of the mind when you buy a digital camera, you're buying into a system that includes bodies, lenses, flashes, accessories, etc. I'm not entirely objective about this, but when I look at all the offerings and compare systems (the ability to grow), Canon is number one and Pentax is a distant third or fourth.

The K10D is a fabulous camera and one I'd buy if my desire to expand was small, especially given the huge price difference.
But the OP wants a system to grow into and thats Canon or Nikon. As the 40D dumps on any Nikon remotely close to its price and Canons system is far more coherent IMO, the 40D is a no-brainer.

Don't rule out Pentax until you see what it can do. One of the members of our local groups shoots with Pentax and gets excellent results. His site is here... (external link) Having seen what the cameras are capable of, I'd buy Pentax before Sony...

There are some Pentax forums around. The best way to find them is through the Pentaxian (external link) website.

His camera is not capable of anything at all. On the other hand his photography might be fairly good. But I can guarantee you his results would be the same using an Olympus a Sony or a Nikon.

Now is a poor time to invest in Pentax especially considering Hoya's announcement of dismissing Pentax after they merged with them. Better wait and see until that blows over.

Umm... no. They specifically said that it would be a stupid move to drop the pentax brand after the history it has with it. Basically, the brand will stay around, just under new management or perhaps a merged hoya-pentax brand on the cameras.

If that's the case then the K10D is going to become a collectible!
