Looks like the white balance is off in both images as they both have an orange cast to them.
Were you shooting in auto white balance?

nice, but those rings look mighty soft. missed focus? camera shake? web compression? I dunno. I want to say 1 is nice, but it's just not grabbing me. And honestly, I don't even know what to suggest on it. It just doesn't grab me. boy I'm helpful.... :(

Number 1 needs all the shoe in the shot or a tighter crop, plus a white balance correction.
Number 2 looks soft and underexposed - composition is good.

I like the composition of these. But I have to agree, the WB seems off to me, and the rings are a little soft. ;)
