Just playing around with my colleagues 24-105 which I am thinking of getting. I've noticed on his 5d that from the range of 70-105, it doesn't seem to "zoom " that much. It was the whole reason I wanted to choose the 24-105 over the 24-70. I'll be using mine on a 40d. For those who have the 24-105 on a crop, do you find the extra reach substantial?

For me, yeah. It means often I can go out and take the 10-22 and 24-105 combo instead of the 17-55 and 70-200. That was when I had a 24-105.. dammit, I want one back. Time to give Yoda a hard time again

Yes, I do. From 70-105 on a crop you have a similar AoV difference as 112-168 on FF, so this is substantial. Very similar difference in zoom range as from 35 to 55, 100 to 150, etc.

Another thing to consider is what you will be using this lens for, and whether you need F/2.8, or IS.

From my viewpoint, a 24-105 is a variable 50 mm lens, as 50 mm is the geometrical midpoint of this zoom. The geometrical midpoint of the 24-70 is 41 mm. 50 mm essentially is a great FL for portraits on a crop, while 41 mm is too short for that. So, in my view of the world, the 24-105 is an ideal portrait zoom. F/4 generally is not a problem for portraiture, because even at F/4 you still struggle to get everuthing from the tip of the nose to the cheeks inclusive within DoF.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

Eh, I don't really miss 70-85 but after having a play with someone else's 24-105... the extra reach is noticeable, imho. I was able to get notably closer to the action which we were near.

Someone posted this link on another thread and I've found it pretty useful in visualising the zoom.
