Do you suffer from dust in your lens? many threads keep on dealing with this issue and I was thinking about buying one, I need to know if it is true or not...

Thank you, Sarel.

So? what's your point?
While many threads deals with it, none of them can provide a conclusion.
Some may suggest that there is a problem while some says it is not.

A simple poll can solve this issue, don't you think?
Since you own it, you could simply answer, yes or no...

Sarel.

Hi Sarel, i've only had mine a week and have taken it out once to shoot a gig, plus used it around the house and garden, so for what it's worth, i've had no percievable dust problems so far, and i'm quite happy with the money spent on this lens.

Sarel.

There is no conclusion because it varies. Your thread is no different from any other ones which will not give you any conclusion. One thread might have 20 dust problem owners voted, 10 good copy owners voted, while the other might have 10 dust problem owners voted and 20 good copy owners voted....you get the idea (I hope).

Having that said, my copy was flawless. If you have read many threads, you should be able to find out that the dust does not effect the IQ at all, and it can be prevented with a UV Filter on.

Good luck with yours (and your magical poll that will give you a "conclusion").

Cheers.

Thank you, Sarel.

i have not one bit of dust... i make sure barrel isn't cover in dust when i zoom it back putting it away. i have had a bw uv filter on since day one.
i wouldn't worry one bit about this dust thing much ado about nothing IMO while not happy about it on $1,000 lens i can live with it.

what i would be more concerned with is the purple fringe i get no different than the 17-85 it replaced for my 40d. i do not get purple fringe at all on my 70-20is f4L.

D700 paired with 24-70 f2.8; 70-200vr f2.8 capped off by B+W MRC fPro UV filters, B+W Kaesemann Circular Polarizers, Manfrotto 055xprob/488rc2. All comfortably carried with Kata R102 backpack... adding as needed :>;) yep sold my canon gear and switched to the dark side :p

And you think this hasn't been done before? I bet many people who don't even own this lens will vote. Forum polls aren't scientific, and you'd be pretty silly to take it seriously as being indicative of anything irrefutable.

As for the question, no dust.

Then maybe I need to get it more focused...

Does this lens suffers from dust more than others (let say compared to the "weather sealed" 24-105 or the 24-70 ???)

Thanks, Sarel.

Yes.. but then I'd like to add a 'so what?' You'll hear about certain 17-55s being dust pumps, but then what about everyone who's totally happy with their copy? They're off shooting, and we'll never hear about it. I bet the number of these users far far outnumber the people suffering issues.

Oh, and unless you've got an exorbitant amount of dust in it, there will be no degradation in IQ. You'd be worrying over nothing.
If you really want this lens, get it, slap on a UV filter and shoot away.

I've been using one for over a year and am happy with it.
I never really paid attention on whether it gathers more dust compared to the other lenses, rather I am more concerned with the quality of the images it can produce, than cleaning the lens when it gathers dust.

I bought mine sight-unseen used from adorama..

the guy on the phone said it is 'as new'..

It arrived pretty dusty.

I'm considering sending it to Canon for a cleaning.

Adorama lost me as a customer.

I would have returned it, but it was shipped to a friend in the US, and I picked it up later.

Grr.

and what makes it even worse, is I bought a 77mm hoya shmc filter at the same time, to avoid the dust problem from happening.

Top quality filter to keep dust out of an already dusty lens?

Double grrrrrrrr

I have had mine for several months now and it has become my main lens. Peeking in there I see a fleck or two but nothing to indicate it is a dust vacuum.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I love mine. It got dust in it. Someone on this forum told me to put a filter on it. I did and it helped. I have not seen an increase in dust.

I've had mine since June this year and have 191 keepers in my Lightroom library from this lens. I dare say I've taken a good many more shots than that, before culling. I haven't gone out of my way to look for evidence of dust but I have never noticed dust in any photographs or within the lens itself.

The only time I have noticed severe dust problems is sensor dust when using my 100-400 at the zoo and making a few lens changes during the day. I think that was just an unlucky day because following a good blow and dusting of the sensor the problem has not returned.

OK, I've just done a quick check on my 17-55, 10-22 and 100-400 and I cannot see any internal dust in any of them. I did use Hoya/Kenko Pro UV filters when I first got the lenses but have actually stopped doing that and now rely on hoods alone for protection. I think if I was shooting in a dusty atmosphere I would put filters back on, to protect the front element and help dust sealing.
