It should have been D300 instead of D200.....which do you think would have come on top then...?

Frankly, the 40D.

I don't mind that magazine, although in Australia, it's expensive at around $14.50...haven't read the review, since we're usually 4 weeks behind the UK. If I have the money, I'll probably get it. The results are no surprise, all of the opponents are a generation old in terms of technology. It's like comparing this years F1 cars to those from 3 years ago...

I still don't know why everyone puts the D300 up with the 40D. Looking at Nikon's lineup the D300 is Nikon's 5D, their D80 to the 40D, and the D40x is the XTi. Then Nikon has the two D2's, one for speed and the other for IQ, which I'm sure they'll do with the D3, and should be compared with the 1D series. The D300 is a higher class camera than the 40D, not just in price. Anyone else agree?

The Nikons fill the gap in the Canon line-up, and the Canons fill the gap in the Nikon line-up.

The 5D is better than the D300, which may be better than the 40D, which is better than the D80, which may be better than the 400D, which is better than the D40....... Blah, blah, blah...

The problem here is that you're comparing an 18 month old camera (the D80), with a brand new unit. That's an unfair comparison. Sure, you can argue it's Nikon's fault for not releasing a new camera to take on the 40D, and you'd have some merit in that argument. I think though, Nikon is targetting (and rightly so), the upper market and pro market. The reasoning? Because, if the pros use their gear, it *must* be good, and that translates into more sales. Nikon has been losing to Canon in the pro market for some time now I believe.

COMPLETELY agree... I think the D300 is actually though marketed below the 5D but above the 40D... but if anything its more comparable to a 5D than a 40D...
