so how many shots do you normally end up with that the happy couple can proof and order from? How much is "too much"?

Sometimes when you give people too many options it's hard for them to make decisions. If you intend to sell prints I'd limit the shots by pose/location as much as possible so there aren't multiple shots of the same thing that might make it difficult for them to decide which they like.

If you are giving them a CD/DVD then I'd include anything you think shows off your "best work."

I can easily shoot 200 plus photos in an hour of shooting. I've culled that down to about 150 shots for a recent couple. I'd usually use less but for this couple it was challenging to get them to smile and stuff so I've included more shots that I might not think are great but they might like the look of.

I'm the same way- I've got 150+ from the shoot, but usually give them 30-50 or so to pick from. Is that too much, too little, or just right? (goldylocks?)

I will shoot 70-100 in 1-1/2 hours- but they will only see 24-30 of them.

isn't that a bit much to sort through? I'd never want that many to choose from if it's only the engagement; wedding yes.

We just threw them all in an album and ordered 3 different prints that we liked.

It worked out well.

I would say about 50 on the proof website for an engagement shoot. But sometimes I'll provide them with more.... depends on the shoot and my mood! ;)

I generally deliver 100, sometimes 10-15 more, depending. I like to shoot short sequences so I can use them in a slideshow, which pushes up my count. I typcially clock in around 700 frames between two bodies at each shoot and the sessions are usually 75-90 minutes, tops.

It ranges. Sometimes 12. Sometimes 40. I try not to go overboard. I remember back when an 'engagement shoot' meant ONE pose, one proof, and that was enough to satisfy people.

wow; big range. I should have made this a poll with ranges to pick from.

Philco, I understand the burst concept, but 700 engagement shots? How many do you shoot at a wedding? shouldn't the engagement shoot be a preview of the wedding?

From my first shoot, I shot about 400 photos alongside other photographers so we ended up with about 1300 photos in total which covered two clients.

I shoot between 100-200 shots. I'm usually happy with about 75-100 that are given as proofs. Usually the number is around 75
