I have just received my 40D, and have downloaded the upgrade to ACR 4.2. I have placed the new ACR file in the location indicated by Adobe (where the old one was located):

c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats

I have done this twice, and have checked and double-checked that the file is in the proper location. However, when I look at 40D images in Bridge, all I see are generic Windows image icons. When I try to open an image in PS, I get an error message that the file is the wrong type.

I tried to follow these directions from the Adobe site:

"NOTE: If generic camera thumbnails appear in Adobe Bridge, follow the these steps:

1. Check to make sure the plug-in was installed in the correct directory in step 4 above.
2. Start Bridge.
3. Choose Tools > Cache > Purge Central Cache. "

Unfortunately, when I choose Tools > Cache in Bridge, "Purge Central Cache" is not an option. All I can do is purge the cache for the current directory, which does not help at all.

In another thread here, someone suggested opening PS and having it check for updates. This apparently solved this same issue for another person. However, when I do this, it tells me that there are no new updates available.

So, I am stumped. I have followed the directions for installing ACR 4.2 to the letter, and I still can't see my 40D images. I would appreciate any help or advice (other than to use something other than CS3; I have tens of thousands of images in CS3, and I am not going to start using someting new:)).

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

What's more, I just checked on the "old" version of ACR that I removed from the File Formats directory before putting in the "new" version, and it turns out that both files are version 4.2.0.14. That is, I already had the newest version of ACR before "upgrading." So, I guess that my problem is not with the version of ACR, but with something else. Again, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Are the files in sRAW format? Adobe software is unable to read sRAW but can read the normal RAW (CR2) format files.

You can manually purge the cache. If you haven't changed the cache location, by default on Windows computers its at "C:\Documents and Settings\JUser Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Cache"

Make sure that neither Adobe Bridge or Photoshop is running and simply delete the CONTENTS of the folder, not the folder itself. You can also do the same for the Adobe Bridge Cache at "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Adobe\Bridge CS3\Cache"

If neither of those work, start Adobe Bridge, go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced and check the "Use Software Rendering" box.

Thanks for the comment. I have found the problem, however. My 40D has version 1.0.4 of the firmware, not the original 1.0.3. Canon screwed up in this firmware release. You can read about a fix that works here:
