I am kind of torn and undecided as to which way I should go. What advantages would one have over the other. I know I am a newb - went to DP review but the tech specs are a bit hard to get through as both lists are sooo long.

Feedback or opinions please ..... help :)

thanks in advance for any input,

Rick

Refurb 30d would serve you much better imo for any purpose.

Pretty much every thing but mostly sports (soccer) and landscape, nature. I'd like to experiment with portraits (family, friends)

I bought a refurbished 30D in Dec 2006. No complaints whatsoever. Camera has performed flawlessly. (Hope I haven't just talked up a problem...)

I saved around ukp 200.00 (over $400) over a new 30D, and have no regrets over no buying new.

One more vote for a refurbed 30D (as long as it has a warranty for at least 3 months)

Really Right Stuff has a 30D body for $800. (Pretty good deal and I am sure it is in pristine condition)

OK thanks everyone. What are the benefits of the 30D over the XTI.

Better and faster autofocus
Bigger body (fits in most male hands better)
Better build (metal body)
ISO 3200
5 fps

To name a few.

I have a 30D, my parents have an XTi. The XTi is a great starter camera and fits a lot of people's needs. But there really is no comparison between the XTi and the 30D. I'd say 30D for sure, especially if you are going to shoot sports.

I'll name one more: The rear control wheel. I couldn't imagine haivng to go through button pushing exercies for all of the things the wheel does, particularly aperture in M and exp. compensation in Av.

Yeah, that is a huge one that didn't come to mind at first.

I was using an XTi and loved that camera. Then I tried a 40d and found that it just "felt" better in my hands. I'd recommend that you put hands on both before making a purchase.

30D without question. It's all about feel and responsiveness for me.

i agree

i went from xt , tried out and xti, then finally a refurb 30d.
waste of money - i really shouldve went with a 30d in the first place

(not to say xt/xti are bad... they just dont have essential "advanced" --lack of better word-- features like spot metering , higher fps, build, iso3200, controls)
