Going back to China for a month or so in a while, looking at these Portable Multimedia Storage units.
Anyone use either of these? The Epsons look nice but I'm hoping one of these two will do the job with twice as much memory for $100-150 cheaper....any other thoughts? (not too worried about having the best screen)

Digital Foci Picture Porter Elite 80GB

I shoot raw with my 5D and both look like they suppport that

If you don't mind, here's another option to look at; the HyperDrive Colorspace (http://www.hypershop.com/shop/index.php (external link)). They have a range of models with up to 250 GB of memory. About a month ago I picked up a 160 GB model. I found the price fairly reasonable for the features it offered. They also offer a case into which you install the hard drive of your choice. I know that a couple of Forum members have gone that route.

Can't hurt to have a look!

One other point; obviously I don't know your style or how many photos you might take but if you plan to be away about a month and you shoot raw you may well need more than 80GB of memory. For a few extra bucks it would be better to have more than not enough memory!

Although I don't have the ESP, I can vouch for Wolverine being good products to date and great service if needed. They upgraded my FlashPac to a FlashPro for the current cost difference plus actual shipping. I have had only one problem with either to date and that issue has apparently been resolved for all new units and I know how to prevent on mine as well. Except for the one time issue, I never lost an image.

Very cool, thanks for the info on the HyperDrive COLORSPACE, love the inexpensive batteries abd battery pack! ...Yeah, I might need more than 80 and 120 or 160 might be better anyways if I decide to get a 1DS series body or if a 5DmkII has like 16mp....

I ordered an extra battery as well as the optional AA external battery pack for the COLORSPACE. When I travel I always have rechargeable AAs with me for flash units, etc. so it seemed logical to pick up the battery pack.

is there a folder structure with the wolverine or do the files just get dumped into one big folder? I am looking for a storage solution for a 16 day trip to Alaska in the summer.

For the wolverine each card goes into its own folder (or at least it does on the FlashPro and did on the FlashPac ) they are labeled CF00001 then CF00002 or SD00001

Have both already, Not an option for me traveling through China, the last thing I want to do is add more weight to an already heavy walkaround getup. Think I'm gonna spring for a Wolverine 120GB

I use a Creative Zen Vision W - only 30GB but a great screen for reviewing stuff and it's been plenty big enough to date though I haven't been on any long trips with it yet, (2 days max so far). Transfers a 4GB CF card in around 10-12 minutes so when I fill a card up I pop it in, start the transfer and switch to my other card so as to be able to keep on shooting.

Only niggle I have with it is that the CF card doesn't go all the way in, (about 1/3rd sticks out of the edge).

I have the Wolverine ESP. Worked great when I was in Africa this summer for 3 weeks. I was able to download a memory card every night and have the card freed up for the next day's shots, so it worked like a champ for its purpose.

It's not the most user-friendly interface (a bit too DOS/early-Windows-like), but once you use it a bit, it's pretty easy. The viewing screen is OK, but nothing to write home about for resolution (your 5D will probably be better for determining keepers). OTOH, I got mine at Costco for something like $120 6 months ago; for the portability and relatively low power consumption, it was great.

The Hyperdrive seems like a sound choice. It looks pretty user friendly. I like the fact that both the HDD and battery are user-replacable. So you can just purchanse the cheap 40gb version, and upgrade the drive yourself with a much larger P-ATA drive when need be.
