Well since I returned my 24-70 for not having enough reach, I decided that Im going to research a bit more before my next lens purchase.

So I was wondering if anyone who owns both a 50mm and 85mm prime can setup their tripod and take a picture of an object at 10 and 30 feet away?

If possible, the same test with a 70-200 at 70mm 100mm and 200mm at roughly 100ft.

Macro and people are what I shoot most, family get togethers and such where I cant get very close. I attend alot of weddings, baptisms and quincineras (mexican coming of age for 15 year old girls) so between all the dancing and drinking Im alot safer at my table, or on the side taking pictures than walking around.

I also do a bit of walking around, usually in outside the city, zoos and things like that.

Go here http://www.usa.canon.com …_Station&fcategoryid=2533 (external link)

Click on EF Lenses 101, then focal length comparison. You can see the difference in field of view from 15mm to 1200mm

If the 24-70 was too short you really should look at a 70-200.

Programs like f/calc will allow you to quickly compute that

50mm on APS-C at 10' sees a 2.95 x 4.42' area
85mm 1.7 x 2.6'
70mm at 100' sees 21.4 x 32.1'
200mm 7.5 x 11.2'
