Hi - newbie questions here. I have a Canon Digital Rebel and am having trouble with some of the file names the camera is giving the images. Normally they start with "IMG" but some are being saved with a file name that begins "_MG". This is happening to different images within the same folder. This causes the files to be out of order when I download them to my computer.

1) Why is this?
2) What can I do to prevent this?
3) Is there an easy way to correct these file names without manually renaming every file? (talking hundreds of images)

Thanks in advance,
Paul

If you set the camera to adobe RBG it will name your files that way. Are you changing the setting while shooting?

Like I said, I'm a newbie - am still learning to use this camera. I didn't intentionally change this setting (not sure what it is). Could I have inadvertently changed it while changing ISO setting? The Camera is actually my wife's - I moved her to this from a Canon Rebel 35mm camera that she loved - it took great pictures. We feel that we've taken a step backwards, although as we learn to use this new camera hopefully things will go more smoothly.

Thanks,
Paul

Just went and checked the camera - and yes it was set to adobe RBG. Not sure how I did that. Now I just need to learn what this setting does! Back to the manual I guess.

Still wondering if anyone has a trick to fix these file names.

Thanks,
Paul

Why do you want to fix the file names? You can rename them all in a batch with any number of file renaming programs. On a Mac I use A Better Finder Renamer or I batch rename with Adobe Bridge. I'm sure there are similar programs for Windows.

In any case, Wikipedia says this about Adobe RGB:

The Adobe RGB color space is an RGB color space developed by Adobe Systems in 1998. It was designed to encompass most of the colors achievable on CMYK color printers, but by using RGB primary colors on a device such as the computer display. The Adobe RGB color space encompasses roughly 50% of the visible colors specified by the Lab color space, improving upon the gamut of the sRGB color space primarily in cyan-greens.

What this means is that if you're planning to print using a CMYK printer, you will probably want to use the Adobe RGB Space and your files will have the "_" as the first character. If, like most of us, you utilize a home printer or a web based service such as Mpix or Printroom, or local printing services like Costco or Walmart, you'll want to use the sRGB setting on your camera.
