I apologize in advance, but I am new to photography forums and relatively new to photography. I have been scanning thread after thread and learning all kinds of new information here. I am very grateful to you all. But I keep coming across this "Live View" term and again, I apologize for my ignorance, but PLEASE, someone explain what it is. I even did a search on the forum for the answer but I could not find a clear one.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!:)

Live view is a feature on Canon's newest DSLR's (right now the 40D and the 1DMKIII) which allows the camera to show a live view of the subject on the LCD screen on the back of the camera (not previously a normal feature for DSLR cameras). It has some restrictions, but appears to be useful for some situations.

So, it's the same concept of viewing live images on the LCD of point-and-shoot cameras?

...except that it's not quite as simple as a P&S because there's the issue of the mirror, which needs to go back up if you'd like auto focus.

Yeah, good call.. When live view is turned on, you will NOT be able to look through the view finder... You must look at the screen to take the shot..

Even with it's limitations, Canon's shot a Live View is done rather well. The ability to zoom in 10x and move the displayed area around makes for very easy and accurate manual focusing.

When you say "limitations", you mean the fact that you cannot look through the view finder when Live View is turned on?

If that's the case then it's really not a limitation (IMO) because if you want to look through the view finder, just turn Live View off. You can't look through the view finder and the LCD at the same time. Is that the limitation you're referring to?

No, it has limitations because you can't really autofocus while using it. You have to switch out of 'Live View" mode to focus, then it switches back to Live View.

That and as tsaraleksi says, autofocus use is hinkey. LV is really best used when tripod mounted and manual focusing. Then it's great. LV allows one to really zoom into an area and focus exactly on the area you want in focus. It's also great for focus stacking macros.

I guess OP means me? (I don't know what that means) So, my response to your comment is:

Gee thanks, but I actually clicked his Google link and read a lot on Live View - mostly theory. I have, however learned things in this thread, in terms of application and actual user experience, that I did not find in the Google search. So I'm appreciative toward those who took the time to provide their feedback despite my newbie question.

So Keith, thanx, but Randy referred me to Google - I didn't need a duplicate referral as I saw the first one. Don't mean to be nasty here (especially since I'm new and not a nasty person), but I'm very active on the BMW car forums and just have little tolerance for people who have to put their 2 cents into a thread in the form of an insult or wise-arse remark. I joined this forum because I want to learn and associate with those who have the same passion as I. Not to do battle with "wise" folk.
