40D B&W question

If I shoot in black and white using RAW, can I use a IR filter and have the same effect as if I using "true" black and white film?

Here's a start on this, but an IR expert will probably chime in soon with a comprehensive reply.
RAW files contain all of the recorded data for all colour channels, irrespective of the shooting mode. If you use an IR filter, most of the blue and green data will be essentially blank. In post production, you can play with the R channel data (after conversion from RAW) to your heart's content, with results very similar to that achieved with film.
