what do you do with all your pictures? Do you download them on your PC? How many do you print? Save them to CD? Delete most of them?

I download them on my pc and then I sort them. If I find an excellent picture I will put it in my online portfolio. I hardly ever print unless I am giving one as a gift.

I download them to the PC, then delete those that are obviously worthless. They're saved by ZoomBrowser by shooting date, so they're pre-sorted.

Every few months I move the older folders from "My Pictures" to my "Canon Archives" folder, then burn the whole "Canon archives" folder to another DVD. I keep the DVDs forever.

When I backup the computer I include "My Pictures" but not the archive folder.

I post quite a few on various forums and on my Smugmug page, especially those from motorcycle rides.

I print those that are special and hang 'em on the wall. Can't print larger than 8-1/2 X 10 at home, though.

I keep all of my photos, except the ones of no use ever... I keep them in appropriate folders, and after a while, I back them up to my external hard drive for safe keeping, just in case...I'm a pack rat.

I never delete a photo I take. And I take alot. I download to the computer. And every month, I back up to 2 different external drives. One is kept in our safe with other valuable items. I upload alot to photobucket for sharing, and figure if i ever loose everything, i will still have photobucket.

I take alot of pictures. I have over 500 GBs of pictures on this computer.

I download them to my PC, tag them in Elements and delete the ones that I do not like and thus will never use - bad composition, out of focus, etc. I then selectively edit the ones I am really interested in (crop, colour edit, unsharp mask, red eye as required, etc.) and may make a print of a few for my collection. I back the images up to CD, but not as often as I should. HTH.

Cheers,

WesternGuy

I don't print many anymore. They get archived on my PC and a server. Then they get backed up to CD and DVD. I also make copies on CD for the copyright office when I register work.

I put them all on my PC and back that up once a month.

I usually make photo books of my 4 kids and my 10 nieces and nephews on group vacations etc to give as Christmas presents.

I also make a single photo book annually for my immediate family. This book replaces what I used to do with film which was to develop everything, toss the junk, put the best in an album and the remainder in a box.

Yes, and then on my web sites if and when I get around to sorting through them.

None.

Save them to CD? Delete most of them?

I don't really delete any of them, unless it's something stupid like an all black frame from where the spotlight moved just before I took the photo. They're all saved to hard drive and imported into Lightroom, and backup copies of the RAW files are saved to an external hard drive. I'll periodically take the external hard drive to work with me and upload photos to a web hosting account (which I already had for something else, and happened to have a lot of free disk space).

I download them to my computer. Delete in bad ones. Then copy them to an external hard drive for a backup. Then I clean the origionals up and throw most of them on my website jpegcity.com. Lately I've been a little more selective as to what I put up on my site sense I think I'm getting a little better. Eventually I'll probably clean up the site and just put the really good shots up there. I usually only print them if I'm going to give them to someone.

I first create the directories I am going to store them in. Then they all get downloaded to my PC. At that time I do a culling and dump maybe %25 of them. Before doing any processing I backup all the raw files to the backup PC and write out a backup CD as a secondary backup.
After all the data stuff is taken care of I start doing my PP. Of the remaining pics I PP maybe another %25 of the pics and store them as jpegs. These I use as my screen saver pics.
If there are pics that I want to print, I will save them as .psd and do the necessary PP then print the pics. Of these some will get uploaded to my flickr account, some will be sent to friends and family.
If the shoot is for someone else for $$$ my workflow is about the same but the final product will depend on the form they are looking for.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I delete about 90%. Im quite aggressive in editing my own stuff. If I dont immediately like it, its not worth keeping.

I upload some "decent" stuff to flickr, but even that gets deleted from time to time as I get tired of looking at it.

I only archive my very best work on an external hard-drive. At the moment there are only 48 photographs. I dont categorize anything by date. I just work out an appropriate name for each photograph, and I have a Moleskine notebook filled with info on each of these pictures. I write the name of each photograph on a separate page with date, location, time, exif data, film type, exposure settings and then a paragraph or two describing the photo.

About once yearly Ill go through these "good" photos and exhibit about 12-20 of them at a group exhibition with some friends.

Generally speaking, I:

  • Upload to my PC
  • Back up those originals to external disk
  • Delete the obviously unwanted captures
  • Preview and convert the "keepers" from RAW to TIFF (tweaking along the way with ACR).
  • Open the TIFFs in PS CS3 and tweak if necessary, saving to JPG.
  • Back up all these files to external drive, in a sub-folder of the orignals
  • Burn that whole folder structure to CD or DVD (depending on total size)

Then, I either

  • Upload shots to a private web site for my customers/friends/etc., or
  • Upload to my public online portfolio for the world to see, or
  • Print certain ones for display in my home gallery, or for gifts

I download to either my laptop or desktop (if laptop, when I get home they get transfered to my desktop). I try to weed out oof shots, bad shots, and shots I really do not like either on the camera (for the really bad ones) or once they are on one of my PCs.

Then I have a RAID server that backsup my desktop pictures folder. I do not burn them to DVD or CD as both have a shelf life just like most media (consumer burnable disks lack the extra protection layer that most retail bought dvd/cds have).

Sometimes I will print my favorites, but most of the time I just enjoy them on my computer. I also have a homemade digital frame (made from a 15" LCD) that I use to display some of my favorites. Finally I also upload some to my website.

I am trying to get better about not keeping every shot I take cause some are just not that good and start to eat up space.

I'm also guilty of taking lots of pics and keeping too many. I delete ones that are obvious OOF, and other bad shots, but only 10% (if that) are worth showing or printing. I'm a packrat, can't help it.

I sort into folders by the year/month. Monthly backups to my WD external drive.
