Okay, maybe I'm a retard, but can anyone tell me how to turn off/on the color management on the Canon i9900 printer? I really would like to use LR for printing without having to export the image to another program to do so. :(

I'm not sure about Windows, but on Macs this is controlled through the application's (in this case, should be Lightroom) print dialog box. In PSCS3 there's a pull-down that allows PS to manage color (and select printer profiles). I suspect LR would be similar, regardless of platform?

Oh, and it's "printer challenged". :)

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Dude, I've been over that and I get a list of worthless printer profiles. :( In CS3 I'm able to let the Photoshop manage the color profiles for printing. Easy as pie. But LR makes you turn off the printer profiles (which sucks balls), and I don't know how to do that with this particular printer because it doesn't have that option when the printer dialog box appears (which sucks balls). :cry:

Oh well. I guess I'll just continue to export to CS3 for printing. No biggie.

Sorry about the problems. I use Aperture instead, but would this link help any?

LM – I never did find the “On/Off” Switch for color management. From the thread you pointed to, I found two ways to work within the printer setup to improve the color in my prints.

1. The link to Steve’s DigiCams will basically tell you to make sure you have your printer settings match the profile you want to print with. In your case i9900 printer, set your paper to Photo Paper Pro (for example);
Change Print Quality to custom and “Set…” your preferred settings (Quality=Fine, Halftoning=Diffusion);

Set your Color Adjustment to Manual and “Set…” your colors to zero. Un-check or leave the “Enable ICM” checkbox empty and set your print Type to None.

In this case you would set the Lightroom Color Management Profile to: Canon i9900 PR1 (The PR designation is for Photo Pro paper, M is for Matte and SP is for the Photo Plus Glossy paper the number after the letter designation is the quality setting)

The article goes into much greater detail and will provide much more guidance than my brief description.

2. The Canon PDF Document basically tells you to do pretty much the same thing with one key difference. It recommends you enable the ICM in the printer and let the printer do all the work. In this case you would set the Lightroom Color Management Profile to: Managed by Printer.

Anyone ever manage to resolve this with lightroom and the i9900? I got lightroom fairly close using the BJ color printer profile but it is still printing noticeably darker and more vivid whereas CS2 is dead-on with my monitor using an sRGB printer profile from CS2.

I don't have LR, but I have an i9900. Do you get a Canon printer dialog box after hitting print the 1second time? Usually it appears and you click "properties" to get the the screen where you can turn off color management by selecting "custom" and "none". Maybe LR does not get you to that screen.
Did you try to go to printer properties via the control panel to try to disable CM on the printer?

This may be useful (or I may be way off base). There's a step by step guide to printing on the Canon 9500 from CS3 on Dr. Browns page (http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html (external link) -- search/scroll the page for 9500 to see the video). I know it's a different printer, and a different program, but I'm thinking that some of the steps may be useful and crossover from one app & printer to another combination.

I think I got it now. I had missed the "none" setting in the manual setting dialog box. I'll have to do some more experimenting with it tomorrow.

I'm sure you have done it, but be sure ICM is UNchecked in that same dialog box.

There is one additional step to turning off Canon i9900 color management that I found helpful: disable automatic paper type detection.

To do so, open the Printer Properties dialog click the Maintenance tab then click Custom Settings. Uncheck the option to Identify Paper Type and 'send' the new settings to the printer.

When I had this option checked, it didn't matter what other settings I used, the printer would always choose the profile associated with the paper (glossy, plain, matte, etc.).

So to summarize, here's how I turn off the i9900 color management:
In the Printer Driver dialog:
- I set Color/Intensity to "Manual", then click the Set button
- I then set the Print Type to "None"
- I make sure the "Identify paper type" option in Maintenance > Custom Settings is disabled.
