haha out of all the predictions ive heard on a possible 5d replacement, a swivel LCD is just about the most outlandish of them all. what on earth would you want a swivel LCD for?

Low angle live view shots. It would be real handy for us macro buffs. Another would be for high, over the head live view shots. Angle the screen down and its no longer spray and prey but you could actually compose the shot.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

"what on earth" is exactly right. Ground level macros in the mud would be a lot more comfortable with such a display.

Hmmm. Don't have a 40D yet, so I can't try this - but couldn't you attach an auxiliary mirror at an angle, hinged at the bottom, so you could see the live view screen from above?

Should be useful for low-level macro focusing, seems to me...

No 40D here either - the mirror trick could work though. Good idea. Mind you, with a good sized LCD and a decent viewing angle, it might not come to that, which I guess would mean that a swivel WASN'T necessary for ground level macro - there goes one of my my arguments! :)

The mirror could be hinged at the bottom to a mounting plate that attaches to the tripod mount, maybe. Sounds simple enough.

My wife has a P&S with a live view screen, maybe I'll play with it.

Well, Canon gave the star weenies their own camera - the 20Da. Maybe they'll give the bug hunters their own camera too. The 40Dm with swing out LCD.

I have found the swivel screen on my G5 very handy at times.
