My girlfriend, Al, recently gave me a gift, and it sort of brought things in to perspective for me. She bought me a plant - a simple, living, breathing, good looking, healthy plant. Along with the plant, she included a note, written on a business-card sized piece of paper, reading "Don't forget to feed me".

It sort of got me thinking: sometimes we get so caught up in the running of our businesses, building new websites, developing new strategies, working on advertising and processing images, that we forget about our roots (pun most certainly intended). I mean, the reason we're doing what we're doing is for the photography, right? Yet, I've talked to so many photographers who have completely lost the passion they have for the art of photography and are doing it purely as a business. They're no longer having fun at what they are doing.

Al wrote me a note for my plant, reminding me "don't forget to feed me". Maybe we need sometime similar in our businesses, reminding us that we're doing this because we love it, not because we have to. Maybe we need to get out and shoot for fun every now and then and re-kindle that fire inside us that fuels our passion for photography. So many photographers get so burnt out that they quit photography all together. I don't know about you, but, I certainly do not want this to happen to myself. Keeping that fire going is vital.

There are so many that feel they're stuck in a rut with their business. Either they feel that they can't raise prices, they can't reach their target market, their photography isn't improving, etc. You need the desire, motivation, and ambition to push yourself further with your business and with your photography. Without the passion, there is no drive. The root to our success is our passion.

Maybe we should try writing ourselves our own little "Don't forget to feed me" note.

Anyway, just my thoughts written down. I've been really overwhelmed/stressed lately, and this sort of helped me. Thoughts?

I agree, Kathy!

It's funny, because sometimes only others in the same business/industry will be able to understand your problems. It's a great, tight-knit community we have here!

Wow, awesome man. I'll be the first to admit that I am totally burned out. Between working full time, editing part time, dad full time, husband full time, and trying to be a good friend and son, it can all be to daunting(sp)! It's kinda nice to hear that other people feel the same way. I'm starting totally from scratch and with no formal training or education in photography I totally rely on reading, trail and error, research and the help of good people like yourself to better myself. On that note I just want to thank everyone one on this forum that offers advice, critiques and direction. The "seasoned" professionals here are second to none. And yes Bryan, I will stop to feed my plants, those being my daughters, and take time out of an already booked day to play with them and laugh with them. For it is them that fuel my fire. They tell me everyday, "Daddy, your gonna be great someday. And I want you to be my photographer when I get married." They are 8 and 3, but they will forever be my babies. Cheers to you guys/gals of wedding photography, capturing everyones moments and looking darn good doing it! ;)

Hey Mark!

It is very easy to get burnt out in this industry. I see it left, right and center.I do feel, however, that, again, it comes down to passion. I don't know if you know of David Jay at all, but he's a very inspirational photographer. He speaks a lot about different tactics to "get free" and create freedom in your life. One of the biggest things is to play on your strengths and eliminate your weaknesses.

For example, if you love doing e-shoots, then, offer e-shoots in all your packages. If you hate doing formals at the wedding and carrying around all your gear, then hire a 2nd shooter/assistant to carry your gear and take care of the formals. Easy as that. It keeps you doing the things you love, and keeps the things you don't love, far away.

Just my $0.02!

It's a living, breathing, healthy and good looking male. At least, I'm assuming it's a male.

What living, breathing, healthy and good looking male DOESN'T like beer? Comon Mike, you know better than that!

Glad I could be some help! I think this is the way we all feel, it just takes writing it down to realize it!

Let's hope that you're stopping by the next beautiful place you see, and, then we'll expect you to come post them here, right? ;)

hey man, thanks for this post. good reality check. I always get burnt out at the end of the season. I was feeling unmotivated because I'm DROWNING BADLY in processing but I did an e-shoot today with a really fun couple and reminded me of why I enjoy this so much.
