It also took me a long time to achieve any sort of life-work balance, and I'm finally starting to get there. By night (and weekends!) I am a stock/commercial/wedding photographer, and by day I'm an account manager for a major corporation. Having a career where your income is based on commission and being competitive by nature its been easy in the past for me to get too wrapped up in my work and forget about the aspects of my life that I love - fiancee, photography, etc.
With photography sometimes the same scenario can creep up - you get so absorbed by shooting for clients, editing for clients, taking shots with the intention of selling them, it's so easy to forget why we picked up a camera in the first place, and even why we like shooting the genres that we chose to create businesses around. It's easy to forget that I love doing commercial & product shoots because I'm an advertising nut. I forget that hiking to a scene and taking it all in is why I love shooting landscapes, and sometimes you just have to go out and shoot simply because you love to take photographs.
So, great post Bryan, and it really is a universal concept. The stuff from David Jay is a really interesting way to look at things. I'm overtired and I'm done rambling, hope this post makes a bit of sense!
