So I know that the textured thing seems to have a love/hate relationship going on at the moment, but I thought I might throw up an example from a recent wedding that I thought really works well.

Thoughts, discussion and other examples are welcome.

I like it, in small doses. Doing each image like this might be a bit much.

Can you post your workflow Dan, and maybe where you got your textures from?

No real workflow, as each image gets a totally unique treatment. The basics are textures set as overlays (various blend modes) with adjustments to opacity, hue, saturation, brightness, contrast etc etc etc. Most often I'll use multiple texture layers on each image.

I have some Jesh De Rox textures as well as a growing library of my own.

I do like your example, I just did one up myself for inclusion in an album. I went with a fairly subtle effect, and i'll point it out to them. I'm not sure if putting just a couple of images with textures in the albums is a good idea - thoughts? This one loses a little in the downsize.

I tend to envisage my images as stand alone prints, not album inclusions. I think that anything that stands out too much in an album can break the flow of the story.

I want to create big framed 'art' portraits and canvasses and my studio samples reflect that. I encourage my clients to think about single images from their coverage that we can create a feature out of.

Dan I love your conversion, beautiful.

I think it's something to be done in sparingly and not applied to every single image.

A one off print of that would be stunning

I was just talking about this last night with somebody and I mentioned I didn't like it. But your example is great!! I may have to re-think it! Used in the right place on the right images and it really works!

I am going to have to agree with Toogy here.. when used selectively they can really give the WOW to an image. There is a fine line between tasteful and overdone.

I feel though your example is a fine example of when you can use textures, that if textures are used on the majority of images in a gallery/set the images can tend to lose their appeal (the WOW) and or lose the timeless aspect (become dated in the future)

I love them. There was an entire section of the TPPA (Texas Pro Photog Ass.) on textures and layers this past month...And, like you say Dan, making them stand alone ART pieces, not album prints. People are buying big, odd cropped, textured images right now. :)

When done right I love it, the image in the first post looks great. It is something that needs to be subtle and used sparingly.

Dan, I actually like your texturing you posted here. (that doesn't happen often, I don't like textures) The only part that bothers me is that originally, she was sitting in a nice room on a nice chaise, but now it looks like she's sitting in an Alcatraz cell.

I suppose, as a one-off wall print, it wouldn't really matter. But to be within a set of wedding photos, it just seems odd. But if you are doing this for gallery wraps, then I suppose it's all good. But really, people use canvas to ADD texture to their photos... doesn't adding texture to a texturized medium seem a bit much?
