If you are going to be a professional, you need the proper equipment. Not being able to afford something is a poor excuse, in my humble opinion.
I think your statement is a little too harsh. In my opinion, the XT & the XTi is proper equipment and can produce quality images in the hands of a competent photographer. If a photographer can't produce a quality image with an XT and good glass, they may want to address their deficiencies first before investing in "pro" equipment.
A competent wedding photographer can use an XT/XTi and do well.
Yes, I agree that higher end cameras can produce a greater proportion of keepers in the same hands that produce quality images in the XT. It is a good goal to acquire better equipment when building a business. Take little steps at first. Walk, then run.
However, a professional earning income solely from their images will likely only buy something if the ROI is favorable. Why not drop 30K on the Hasselblad? Because I can't generate enough income from it yet to justify it's purchase. Should I not bother to shoot at all until I get it. No!
You've gotta start somewhere.
