Potcakes are now recognized as a breed (Royal Bahamian Potcake to be exact) and got their name from being strays who were thrown the left overs from the peas and rice pot when the family had finished eating. They make the most wonderful, loyal companions. In September our 12 yr old Potcake, Nikita, passed away. She left a huge void in our lives, and I was delighted when someone showed me a stray mother with her 7 pups living right around the corner from us, under a little wooden shack. the pups were 6 weeks old, flea ridden and anemic. We adopted this one without hesitation:

His name is Bailey. After the drink of course ;)

And the following two photos are of 3 of his sisters (we assume he must have had a different daddy, because he was the only one with his particular colouring - the mother is tan coloured all over ):

Comments welcome......hope you enjoy the photos.

I hope the other ear stands up soon!
A friend of mine adopted 3 of the 6 remaining pups, and then I had to take the mother and the last three to the Humane Society as she decided to move them all into our yard and it was causing problems for Bailey. They told me last week that ALL of them were adopted out within 24 hours, and were just waiting for all their new homes to be checked out and to get all their shots done. The mother will be adopted too.

That is so nice....I hope he/she enjoyed them.

Bailey is now 12 weeks old and getting really big, I swear I can see him growing..he has had all his shots, except one, the rabies shot, which he gets tomorrow. We do not have rabies in the Bahamas, and only 2% of dogs with owners ever get the vaccination.

I believe there is a program in place for Potcakes to be adopted abroad. We have a really bad stray dog problem here, and quite often stories of visitors who come on vacation and encounter a hungry Potcake they just couldn't live without hit the newspapers. Some lucky dogs get to go and live with these kind hearted people. And they adapt to cold weather just fine!!!:D
