as many of you know, i own a mkIII and i use it mostly for wildlife and birds. this particular mkIII was bought from a fellow member and perform perfectly in Servo and has no issues at all. however, i am now in the middle of a little change in what i shoot and found myself in a little dilemma which i am hoping you can help me with.

i have recently started doing some coprorate events and i have been hired to do 3 more in the next couple of months. the last event i did was last week in Vegas and i often found myself frustrated with only having one body (i had to switch between the 24-70 to the 70-200 very often) and i also found the combo of the lens+mkIII+ flash to be a bit heavy for 6-7 hours of straight shooting.

now, because i can't afford to keep the mkIII and pick up another body, i have been thinking about selling the mkIII and picking up a mkII and a 5D so i can have 2 bodies for events while still having a 1 series for my wildlife and bird shooting. i already know that i am going to pick up the mkIII again before the next birding season but my concern is for the next few months due to the events.

advice?

rent? can't imagine it would be more expensive to rent for 3 events than it would be to lose $$ in buying and selling 3 different bodies...

renting is not an option. i don't like being dependent on renting because on top of the 3 events, i also do some portraits sessions and i don't see myself going through the rental process so many times...

I find a 1.6x crop body great for wildlife and birds. Would you consider 2 40Ds ?

I think you've already nailed the solution. The MkII and the 5D provide 8MP and 12MP, and it would seem a great event and portrait set. I can't believe the 5D wouldn't get you through just about anything except some fast action, and be lighter with flash. The 40D plus MkII seems not to fit anywhere near as well due to crop.

You seem to buy and sell pretty easily so that doesn't seem to be an issue.

yeah buying and selling is not the issue. i just want to make sure that what i am doing make senses. as for buying 2 40D's. i don't see that happening because with this option, i am losing everything that i love and need from the 1D and also not gaining anything like FF and super clean ISO which i would like to have for the portraits sessions.

For events I am sure a __D would be just fine. You can still pick up new 20D's and 30D's for less than a grand...used even less. Perhaps with some saving or selling a lens you can keep the MkIII and get a new body.

FWIW, I use a 20D and 30D, in combo with a MkIIN for weddings every Saturday.

I agree totally. With the MKII you are still getting awsome IQ that will enable the bird shooting plus other things on the side and the 5D can do the portraits and such and pretty much do anything else except the fast action. I think it is a no brainer.

My 2 cents:
Keep MIII.
Buy 5D from B&H and utilize "Bill-me-later". Over $600 purchase, no interest for 6 months. You pay monthly payment about $350.

If it was me, I'd keep the MIII and buy a 5D or a 40D. After a few months of events, you can sell it back for about $150 or so loss. I don't know what the finances will be like if you sell the MIII, buy a MII and a 5D, and then sell them again and buy another MIII. It sounds like too much of a hassle to sell and rebuy the MIII while buying and selling the MII and a 5D.

I also think the MII is heavier than the MIII, so that won't help the weight situation.

If it was me, I'd get the 40D b/c it's cheaper and both have a 10MP digicIII images.

Not sure I could go back to a MkII after using the MkIII....

I think you have received the best advice....pick up a used 30D for a song right now and keep the MKIII....
