Most people say that the Sigma 120-300/2.8 is sharper. Are you buying used or new? If you could find a used one at a good price, go for it.

The 300 EX is quite an overlooked lens if only because its 120-300 EX sibling is at least its equal optically and gives you the flexibility of zoom. However, the prime feels a whole lot lighter (I don't know the exact weight numbers) so maybe this is something in favor over the zoom if you plan to handhold a lot. Otherwise, I think the zoom is the way to go.

If it's local, give it a whirl and see how you like it. Especially if it's at a real good price, it should be a nice lens for you.

For the record, the figures (according to Sigma) are:
300/2.8 = 2400g / 84.6 oz
120-300/2.8 = 2680g / 94.5 oz
So the zoom is over 10% heavier.

Mark.
