I recently purchased a replacement hood from the user fotodiox_gear on Ebay. They also have a website here http://www.fotodiox.com/shop/ (external link).

I was looking for a replacement for my ET-83 II (hood for 70-200 2.8L) and I saw theirs at a good price and it was stateside! It ended up being $22.35 with standard shipping via USPS. The seller shipped the next day (Thursday) and I received it Saturday. The hood has the fuzz on the interior, but it wasn't done as well as the Canon brand hoods. I can see a few shiney spots where it wasn't coated evenly.

Overall the hood fit nice and tight and is very sturdy and I would like to think it is more durable feeling than the OEM version. However, I was dissapointed when I looked at the outside of the hood and instead of seeing "For Canon ET-83 II" like the pictured showed, mine says "For Canon ET-83C." They are selling a replacement hood for the ET-83C so I thought they confused my order. I did put the hood on my lens to check the fit and I compared it to my OEM hood and it was the same size and shape.

I contacted the seller and told them of what I received and this was their response, "Hi- thank you for the email - the ET-83C and the ET-8311 are the same hood just called differently in different countries. Thank you. Esther" Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I looked it up on Canon's website and the 83II is a pedal style hood and the 83C isn't. The hood works, and I could see I wasn't going to get anywhere so I just dropped it and left good feedback.

I did get the product in a timely fashion and it will be just fine, but it was mislabled and the fuzz on the interior wasn't evenly coated. I had hoped the seller would have offered to replace it with the correctly labled hood (return shipping my expense), but there was no such offer. Over all these are good replacements, but lesson learned that Canon's products have better quality control at almost 3 times the price.

I hope this helps everyone else if they decide to get one of these or to work with this seller ;)

Josh

Four things:

1. I wouldn't worry about and hassle over a label if the product is correct when the item is so inexpensive.
2. You get what you pay for. Goes to show even something as simple as a hood isn't necessarily a no-brainer. People can screw up anything!
3. Since when are ET-83 II hoods $66?
4. Thanks for the mini-review-ish post.

:)

If you look on Canon's eStore, the ET-83 II is $65 and most other places it is $50 or more (hence the reason I didn't buy OEM). I didn't realize I had purchased a third-party hood until after I purched it and I reread the post where it has replica stated after the description. That is what I get for talking on the phone and browsing at the same time. It was my mistake and I figured it wasn't too expensive anyway and I could try it out.

This was merely just informaive for the rest of you all and especially if anyone is looking for a cheap lens hood alternative that is stateside :D

Hah no worries. I woulda gone cheap too. As long as it works and closely resembles the OEM...it's not like it's a paper hood or one of those rubber collapsible jobbies. :D
