I seem to be having a similar problem over and over. My portraits have hot spots on the face - by the nose and cheeks, etc.
And there seems to be a pinkish/reddish glow to the picture that isn't right.
I use a Canon 30D.
I use Alien Bee Strobes with softboxes- with the main at 5.6, at a 45 degree angle and slightly feathered,
a fill near my camera at 2.8
A background light with a 30 grid at about 4.0 and a hairlight at about 2.8.
I have done a custom white balance with a gray card.

Questions
What can I do to prevent this color from being off?
What can I do to prevent the hotspots on the face?
Once I shot already, what can I do in Photoshop to fix the errors? Please feel free to play around with my pic in PS and let me know what you did!
Thanks,

I certainly am NOT a studio photographer, I am an amateur hobbyist so settings on the lights etc is not something I can recommend as I don't have any :-)

What I can hopefully help with is with some of my understanding. If you look at the colour and contrasts in the photo, you have a white jumper, dark trousers and a dark bike with a mid-contrast background. By exposing for the highlights on the face you would darken the other parts further, and so much, to the point of clipping the blacks. Conversely by exposing for the darker parts you would have blown the highlights.

What kind of metering did you have on the camera?

Maybe if you could reduce the power of the lights, in this situation, so that it acts like slight fill light then it may help with the exposure balance. White balance has probably something to do with the reds.

As an example, if you exposed for the highlights then you would get a shot like this:

If you then do a HSL to reduce the reds then you get this. Look at the histogram, the blacks are complete clipped.

So, ask mommy to dress the child differently and expose for the highlights in RAW. Then white balance wise, try using some of the other settings for lights and see what it does and also, make sure your picture style is neutral if not shooting in RAW.

Hope something I said helps :-)
