Yes, there are actions for this type of post processing. They all suck. Gary Land's work is simply stunning. I really love that look and I'd really like to recreate it in the lighting and the post processing.

Problem is, every website I've seen just offers an action for it and they simply do not cut it. Is there a tutuorial or training offered anywhere (or is part of some training) that gives any insight on how to achieve this multi layered look?

I'm not looking for freebies. This look is important enough to me to pay handsomely.

Try Joey Lawrences new DVD. It has been getting rave reviews and his stuff is quite similar. www.joeyl.com (external link)

I believe you can find his DVD for sale on his blog.

I saw his stuff in Rangefinder a few months back. WOW! It was awesome.

I really dig his work, as well as Dragan and Land. I might check out that DVD. However, my aim is to study their work and come up with my own unique style. There is only one Michael Jordan, and I intend to make my own name in this industry.

"Hey does anyone have a link to that Malone action?", asked Jason. :p

Wow, $299. I think I might just do that. Effective use of hard light and soft light is key it appears.

I love POTN.

he had a cheapy DVD about a year ago that was short and to the point. It was a donation of $25 I think. Anyway, that DVD was pretty easy to follow and had great info. I would love to get your critique of this DVD if you get it. I have heard that its pretty detailed and extremely easy to understand and follow. Good luck with that.

Dave Hill's another guy with a similar style to Land/Lawrence:

I've read claims that Hill does little in photoshop (aside from the pretty wild composites he puts together). I'm sure it all starts with good lighting.

There is an artical about his work in the current Digital Photo Pro mag, tons of layers and image file sizes in the multiple gig's.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

Might look better with more DOF. The OOF areas look kind of bad imo.

Head case - are you talking about Dave Hill?

I know there's a lot of photoshop in his images - I'm just wondering how much he does to the actual models in his images. Obviously Dax Shepherd wasn't hang-gliding whilst taking a picture of himself with his cell phone.

This only works with hard light, fill flash to the side etc. and a darkened or HDR background for use as the composite.

I see myself taking a tripod shot with no people in it and making an HDR shot. Then inserting the people/subject (literally) and taking a shot so that everything will match when composited with no flash shadow.

You really have to watch the DOF in the initial shot to get everything in focus.

Gary Land is who I was referring to. Page 70 of the Nov issue. The first image on the link above to his site of the robot on the battle ship is a 1.5 gig file with many many layers. the article is just a profile of his work and doesn't offer much instruction but it is very interesting.
