I am going on a trip to Haiti in early January and I'm having trouble deciding what equiptment to bring. I am definately bringing the Mark III and my Canon film SLR. Should I also bring a medium format like my Mamiya RB67? What about lens selection for the trip? I'm thinking about leaving the 70-200 2.8 at home and sticking with only the 17-40 and 24-70, thoughts? I was told not to take zooms because dust might be a problem. I don't really have a choice on that front since I only own one prime and it is an 85mm. I need to fit all my photo gear into one bag. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Tyler

P.S. If this thread needs to move let me know. I don't know where else it would go though.

I think a Colt 45 is an important piece of equipment in haiti these days.

Oh, and a bullet proof vest too. ;)

don't bother with the mamiya. When you take someones picture or really a picture of anything, they will be al over you wanting to see the LCD. Plus you don't want to lug that around and worry about keeping it safe while away for the day.

bring the tele instead. Bring as many batteries as you can, electricity can be an issue at times, and reviewing for the people kills the battery.

Be prepared to be extremely popular,

In your position I'd scrap the Canon film SLR, and take the RB67.

I'd also be taking all the lenses you mentioned, including the 85 prime.

I suppose it depends on how much weight you're willing to carry, and whether it's a holiday or a photographic trip?

My best friend in high school took a trip to Haiti with his uncle. In one village, a fight broke out and several people got hacked to death with machetes. This all happened right in front of my friend. Needless to say, they got out of that country as fast as possible.

What is the nature of your trip? Deep exploration? Beach/resort? Hiking?

Don't let these guys rattle you. I've been to lots and lots of places (including Haiti) and believe me, there are worse places to go than where you are headed. As with every destination, you have to exercise reasonable caution but by all means go. Given the option to stay at home to accept the media's portrayal of the world or take a calculated risk to see things for ones self, Haiti should look pretty inviting.
