I went to Best Buy the other day to look at laptops and at the 40D, just to try it out. I couldn't resist. I played with all the Canon DSLR's and put all the settings back to default and fixed all the white balances to AWB instead of whatever people did to make it wrong for the room. I usually take a few shots without a CF card and then I push and turn buttons for about 2 minutes, a few cameras every time.

And I was watching a lady with a Consumer Reports magazine agonizing over a SONY P&S that was $199. That camera was right next to the Canon A570 IS. I told her the Canon was better for $179. It was a bargain. She was even more confused when I finished explaining why a Canon with 1600 ISO setting is better than a SONY with 3200 ISO setting. She didn't sound convinced. :)

When you go out to an electronics store, do you play with all the cameras just for fun? I always consider those places like a candy store.

Yes... always! I also like to pretend to not know anything about the Canon line and ask a few questions... I like to test the associates and see if they're only live up to the first 3 letter of their title...

Yes. Yes, I do.

I set the lenses to manual focus and set the DSLR's to CFn 4-1. That messes with customer's heads. Then the salesmen try to help and THEY can't figure it out, and then they look stupid in front of the customer. That'll teach them to lie!

Sure, I'll play with them if I'm there for something else (I usually avoid Best Buy), but I don't buy them there.

When I'm on a trip to these stores, I can't help but to play with the cameras. I'll even play with the p&s cameras. =)

How can ISO 1600 be better than 3200? More is always better. Next thing you'll be saying a 12MP digicam is not better than one with a 7MP.
:)
In regards to the original question, I generally walk by the camera dept of most stores that have one. Best Buy seems to keep their under glass, so I generally don't mess with the dslr's. The point and shoots on display, sure why not. I like to see what pics others have taken and forgotten to erase as well.

That's weird...walking into a Best Buy with a Mark III around your neck. Why not leave it in the car?

I have an ardent distaste for Consumer Reports. They do weird things like rank the S2 IS above the S3 IS, put the Fuji F30 and F31 in different size categories, and rank Kodak and Sony higher than everything else. One time I was looking at car ratings and they gave bad marks to the Lotus Elise because the ride was cramped and stiff. I don't think Lotus ever intended to make the Elise a spacious, comfy car intended for corpulent executives or affluent soccer moms.

As for playing with cameras at Best Buy, I'd be lucky if the batteries were charged so I can actually do something.

OF course I do! I play with the cameras at work all day long! :D

I do tend to change the setting to what I like and leave it, look aournd, and watch the next person lick it up and be like WTF!?! Consumer reports, OMG! I hate them. I get some many people walking in with consumer reports looking, then saying they need no help. THey grab the Sony, ask my opinion and I give. Then we start all over.
