Man I'm torn, I have a 30D, that I love, and an XTI that I love, spent an hour today playing with a 40d, and am in super love, the face detection rocks. I got to play with it, walking around a wooded area in east Virginia, and it did an awesome job of finding faces hidden among branches, leaving the faces tack on, while not getting fooled by the branches. Damn I should have never played with one.

Which should I sell? XTI with grip, or 30d.

I don't know why I'm even asking, I guess it boils down to $. The 30d is clearly better than the xti, and I'll get more for it, than the xti. So if I'm a cheap sob, I'll keep the 30d and sell the xti.

What really gets me, is I love taking pictures of the moon and my son's t-ball games. All the really good shots of the moon I've taken were with my xti, all the good t-ball pictures were with the 30d, guess the 40d is has the same resolution, better speed, and at least as good at iso, so I should sell them both, and buy 2 40d's ;-(. Forgive me, I'm 1000's miles from home, bored, and alone for the 4th week in the last 6.

It finds faces, makes sure they are in focus, not the bat, a limb, or the microphone they are singing in. I wish I had kept the images, I took around 400 test shots, walking around east VA, today. Got several people to stand move back and forth standing partially blocked by branches, and it really seemed to lock on the most faces, set the proper dof, and make sure the faces were in focus.

You'd better tell Canon about the face detection feature; they seem to have added it to the 40d without realizing it...

when do the next rebates start? We are building a house, and my wife is going to quit her job, and try to make a living making pictures, to do so, we need a good wedding lens, and I don't have one of those for sure.

That isn't a feature of the 40d, it's a feature of the DIGIC III Image Processor, which surely this has. Maybe I was just wishing it, and am way better at doing the focus, frame, click than I thought, maybe I do it now without thinking about it, and later not even remembering I did it. ;-(

What though, do you mean, by "faces". Its one of those tricky words in the English language that has several meanings, and because of that you are making this either for very confusing for us, or making yourself seem somewhat crazy or out of it. "heh heh... faces. FACES! I see...faces!".

Please tell us what you mean by this word?

I am Henry. NOT Hank. And certainly not a length of rope tied in a knot. ;)
My family calls me Hen, but you can call me Chicken. See you out there!

i would stop buying every generation of body.

Bodies lose value, glass doesn't.

Some bodies. Some primes. Some zooms. Same as everyone else.

wow man..I just read what gear you have. A 40d with that 50 1.4 and 70-200 2.8 would be a killer setup. Just add a 24-70L or 24-105L and you'd have an excellent wedding rig.

For weddings, it's necessary to have a backup...but other than that...there really is no reason to keep multiple camera bodies. Selling the xt and the 30d isn't an altogether bad idea. I recently sold my xt and 10d to help pay for my 40d and it was definately worth it.

Face detection is a feature of P&S cameras. It is not in the 40D.

I'd personally sell the XT and get the 40D so that your two bodies would be similar. However, if you want to keep a "main" body and a lighter "travel" body, then sell the 30D.

As far as a wedding lens goes, the 17-55IS is HARD to beat.

+1....good glass will have a more significant impact on your pictures then upgrading to a new camera

What a strange thread.

My 2 cents.

1. The 40D does not have the face detection gimmick found in digicams.
2. If I had a 30D with an XTi for backup I think I would consider myself all set. If I had money to blow I would sell the XTi and get a 40D so that I had two bodies with nearly identical controls.

Selling a 30D to get a 40D is a waste of money IMO. The difference is too small.
