Hope this is the right place. If I have to be out there, what types of protection from the elements is best for camera and lens?

Optech makes a product called the Rainsleeve(http://www.studiolighting.net …ts-you-shoot-in-the-rain/ (external link)). It's basically a thick plastic bag with a drawstring for the front of your lens and a small hole for your viewfinder. It works great, is only $6.00 for two, and each sleeve lasts for multiple uses.

My advice is to spend the $6.00 and see how you like it. If your going to be out shooting in the rain every day you will probally want to go with a more durable product.

The salesman at my local camera store suggested the Rainsleeve over the Storm Jacket for my hobby type shooting and I have been verry pleased with it's performance. The performance of an undamaged rainsleeve is at least as good (and probally better due to no seams) as a Storm Jacket.

I use Aquatech, but you could buy a lot of Rainsleeves for the price.

Another vote for the Rain Sleeve. I just need to configure a zip lock bag so I can use my flash

Long narrow heavy poly bag with hole in bottom end, slipped over hood and attached with rubber band.

They are called sample bags by geotechnical engineers. I lost one and didn't lose any more than one night's sleep over it.;)

Gee, it sounds like a Rainsleeve.
