At another forum I frequent, there is a board which doubles as a share/critique board.

If you specifically want critique, you simply precede your thread title with [critique]. Similarly if you just want to share, you precede the title with [Share]. It makes it very obvious before you even click on the link what kind of feedback the poster is seeking.

If you want both: [Share / critque].

It makes a lot of sense and saves any hurt feelings along the way. I think it could be useful here, too.

Not a bad idea. But I genrally think that most people here do actually want constructive criticism. Generally, if people don't want C&C, they say, "C&C not neccessary."

Or perhaps a "[Be gentle, and DON'T MENTION FOCUS!]" might be suitable...

From what I see, the Glamour.Nude section is under "Sharing"....there is a "Critique Corner" in another part of the forum. Of course you couldn't probably post nude there. But with that said. No one should get their feelings hurt. There are many people here with many different views and opinions. I come here to share. But I accept the critiques. After all, that is what will make me better. There are many other places on the web for just "sharing". I frequent some of those as well. But I don't really see it necesarry to do as you suggested. Of course if you want to do that, then by all means feel free to put that in your thread subject line.

I agree, generally the response I've had has been encouraging and very useful. I've picked up many tips which have helped me along the way. It's in people nature to say if they like or don't like something and I think anyone who posts pictures up on here can reasonably expect that.

You will always get a few however who are rude and abrupt or will post a comment offering little or no explanation but hey that's internet discussion forums for you. It's OK not to like something that someone has posted up and also to say so but if you're going to do that, then at least tell them why and perhaps offer some suggestion as to how they might make changes.

I like to view inspirational work by people like Lorek and Jason Cole and it gives me great ideas to try in the studio but it's also important not to forget the novices who post up their work and want an honest opinion. I've had a lot of help in the past on here so try to put something back once in a while and find such users and try to offer them some well explained advice or suggestion from my honest opinion. People respond well to that and gain a lot from it.

Greetings,
I look at what the posters write. If he/she do ask for C&C, then I may add my opinions. Otherwise, I look at the better side of the image and compliments given. However, to learn and improve, we must take every comments with an open mind. Enjoy...

There are a few unwritten rules here at POTN. bad or good, I think POTNers got udes to them and fell comfortable with:
* Posters who have "Editing OK" in their profile are already kown as open to critique.
* Posters with low post count are implicitely suposed to be asking for C&C, and they receive them, most of the time written in kind words.
* Posters with very high post count receive critique only when requested. Some pillars of the forum are sometimes posting images with poor IQ, which they dont care so much, because theirt purpose is to share some special event where unfortunately they could get a decent image.
* finally, some who are definitely in need of C&c put "c&C" in the thread title.

Gear list. Photoshop tips and tricks I've learned here at POTN.

In other forums I'm a member of there is a difference in a critique and someone just saying something like...

It looks like a frilly wedding dress from the 80's reincarnated as an advert.

Tell me exactly how your comments are a "critique"?

There is a difference in hurt feelings and someone calling someone out for just being rude. I enter print competitions all the time, I get great feedback from judges who are great at letting you know everything you did wrong. The difference is they do it with respect.

Yep you nailed it......

So answer the question, how is your response a critique?

I think it is a great idea.

I also have issues with other people having issues with so called "brutal" or "harsh" critique.

I love the critique given on this forum, and I think it is of more value than nicities. Yes, there are nice ways of saying harsh things - but the bluntness will make you think more, and the more you think, the more you will strive to improve.

As photographers, surely we are all striving to become better at our craft - and there will always be room for something improved in every single image. There is no such thing as perfection in Art.

Every single one of us will post something, at some point, that we think is the bee's knees, but that others just can't see the merit in. Sometimes we all need to be called on it.

Anywho - great idea, and end rant.

Cheers,
Naomi
