Was out hiking and heard of a place that has the largest water wheel in S.C. It use to power an all girls school. Then down the river a ways is Brasstown Falls. It is 1/2 mile of 70degree incline of hanging on to tree roots 50-75 feet above the river to get to, but worth it I was wearing a 75lbs Thinktank bag during this, wew!

Great shots Steve. I like the last the most. What sort of shutter speed was used on that?

HB.

Great pictures.... Would you be willing to share your tips (exif data) on how to get a photo like this.

I know that slowing your shutter speed down is key.... but my attempts haven't been very successful due to the amount of light.

I admire your work.... especially that last shot...

INCREDIBLE.

:)

Thanks Todd! Makes me feel good hehe.

Well for the most part these were taken between 6am-9am. I went stomping through the woods at 4:30 am to egt there betfore sun rise. I did find that the sun rose right over my main subjects in both cases of the water falla and the water wheel. But since It was so early I was able to grab some decent shots before the sun was hitting my lens head on.

The Water wheel I was in the water from 6:30 till 8:00 am and it was about 22F according to my temp gauge and I was wearing hiking shoes that were not water proof. By the time I got out my feet felt liek they were actually on fire. I decided frostbite was on its way and it was time to get out!

Anyways, I used a tripod, f22 and bulb mode with a cable release. For the wheel shots I used a nd4 filter on my 16-35 mkII lens. I also manual focus since it is kind of dark ot make sure things are clear.

The water fall i ended up using a nd4 filter on my 24-70L lens to try to stop the clipping inthe water fo rthe long exposures.

Almost all the shots were 20sec to 1.5 minutes. The water wheel shots were all 1minute to 1.5 minutes long simply because it was so early and still dark. The water fall pics averaged 2-6 seconds becasue the sun was moving on up.

I hope i answered soem of your questions. I will try to answer any more you have, or if I missed somethign let me know.

Very nice shots, I really like them all. Wish I could find something like that down here. Thanks for sharing.

Including the wheel does nothing for the shots in my opinion. I think it should be shot as a separate subject.

The third, however, is fantastic!

I like the fourth too, but the horizontal branch in the foreground is distracting.

Thanks for your comments. I was shotoing the wheel with my 16-35 and was having a hard time moving in the very confined area i was in to get decent shots.

Those are very nice! I particularly like the icicles on the last one. What size/type of grad would you use with the 16-35? 4x5? I just got that lens and have been shopping for ND and ND grads.

I'm originally from Camden, SC and I know the Hilton Head and Greenville areas well so your shots made me a little homesick too. :)

These are great. My favourites are the third and fourth photos.

Thanks for posting your technical details. It's always good to learn how people achieve certain shots and these are quite inspirational for me as I am really interested in night photography and low light work.

Mike

Thanks everyone!

tnunnery, I actually lived in Camden when I got out of the Army. I got married and divorced there. My son lives there with my ex and drive down every weekend to see him...

Mike - I love to hear the stories involoved in the shot which you hardly ever get to hear.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
