I think you need something faster then a 3.5-5.6 if you want to shoot low light

I would say the same thing

Hey you guys wanna see some gross stuff?

I work in a Pathology lab where we document a lot of interesting specimens....here's a "mild" photo of a pulmonary embolus at autopsy.

You are right, but the 60mm is shorter. I don't have one but the 100 with the hood will block built int flash producing a shadow.

Sure it will, but if you are using flash in low light conditions there is not a lot of need for the hood; no hood anyway with either of the macro flashes (except the MP-E 65mm and the MT-24EX).

Hmmm, could do with a bit more saturation and a diffuser to cut the glare (he said nonchalantly) ;)

Your not going to gross me out (unless you add the smells perhaps), but I hope my wife doesn't see this. :p

You need to carry a 5 foot soft box around with you in the OR!

Maybe a 580 bounced off the ceiling would cut the glare down?

This is a nice image, sometimes, especially with so many shades of red the images tend to absorb to much light an the glare is excessive) What equipment did you use for this one? what settings?

If you were talking to me it was just OR lights and I already listed the camera film and lens. Lets see if I remember, probably something like 1/125 at F 5.6? 30 mag. filter...

Hmm...is the camera sanitized ? I am sure is FULL of germs, but then again. You could probably sanitize the softbox/diffuser...dunno how...whithout damaging the fabric. Very interested thread to say the least.

Maybe one of the physicians could chime in but the camera is not sterile and from what I understand thats ok because its not airborne germs. Air kinda goes through a softbox and that can spread them around and the germs will stick to the camera. You can't touch anything sterile with the camera or your owned gowned self like draping on the patient or the instrument tray. Wanna see a nurse managers jaws get tight .

Surgeon in training here...

There is an sterile field composed by whats on the surgical Table (patient) and the drapes over him, The surgeon, OR Tech (The one that hands the instruments to the Surgeon), her table with instruments, the Overhead Light Handles (these are plastic pieces that are sterile for the Surgeons to handle) \

Everything else is non sterile... You would have to wear a surgical attire to enter the OR Suite: Scrubs (The green shirt and pants) Surgical Hat, and a mask.

You can bring your whole bag of gear. Besides what I mentioned, nothing else needs to be sanitized, Surgeons will call for you and they will move the Overhead lights away (Too Bright and Yellow for Photography), the Will also stop what they are doing and move away for you to take the shots.

You CAN NOT physically touch anything that is sterile, you can bend yourself, climb on a Steping stool (readily available in the ORs) if you need to.

Ive seen some pros doing it... They bring their camera with no neck strap, sometimes a hand strap (dont know how to call it) the Surgeon explains what he wants to show in the pic and he takes the shots and shows the surgeon the pics.

Sometimes the Surgeon Kindly ask this guy to stay during the Operation, so he can call for more shots at the appropriate time with no delay waiting for the guy to come.

Pretty much my experience except I always had them leave the lights. In film days at the hospital I worked I would use a 30 mag filter and the color from the lights was pretty much dead on. There have been some cases I documented the entire proceedure.
