So, it's been a few months since I sold my 17-55 and 30D...Just got both today form this board...Really had to get a 30D just so I could have the 17-55 back....Man, what a sweet lens, I forgot just how cool it is to be shooting at 55mm and 1/6th of a second and still have the tack sharp 17-55 "L" like quality. Has anyone else bought a body just so you could use a particular lens? Also bought a 60 macro, I've heard great things about that lens but have never used it.
Anyways, if anyones thinking of the 17-55...just think, I bought another body just so I could use it!!!...LOL

All I have is good things to say about the 17-55mm. It's worth every penny.

I have just purchased the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens

I generally use the 24-70mm f/2.8L along with a wide angle and tele zoom (12-24mm f/4 Tokina and 70-200mm f/4L IS) on two or three bodies when I am doing my serious shooting.

However, there are times when I cannot or do not want to carry a plethora of equipment and want to go with just one lens and body. This is especially true when I am going on a plane trip to do some non-photo tasks. However, I always want to have a camera/lens with me which will provide excellent imagery.

Using the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS on my 30D seems to be the ideal compromise. I will throw my relatively light weight 420ex in my bag and be set for great imagery.

As an example, I am going to Branson, MO with my wife, her sister and brother-in-law. I know that I will not have a lot of time to shoot and my wife asked me not to carry a load of photo equipment.

Will the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS replace my heavy but, wonderful 24-70mm f/2.8L? Only time will tell. It is a half pound lighter and it does have IS!

I did not buy a body just so that I can use a specific lens. But it is lenses like the 17-55 and Sigma 30 1.4 that keep me satisfied enough to not even consider upgrading from a crop body.

Yeah, I have a 60mm macro on the way, I thought about the sigma 30 but I already have a 35L...which, by the way is outstanding on the 30D. Having a 56mm1.4L is very cool. I love the 50mm length on my 5D so the 35L is perfect for the 30D. Kinda nice to be able to take advantage of the EF and the EF-S.

I...almost did with my 40D. Turns out I really don't think I need two body + two walkaround lens. I chose to keep 5D over it since I am planning to expand my line up based on FF.

17-55 is definitely one of the BEST lens I've ever used, if not the best.

Yeah, I sold all my zooms, just love the primes.... I liked both the 24-105 and the 24-70 but I didn't like the f4 on the 105 and want IS on the 70....sound familiar:)LOL Anyway, I still needed a versitle zoom for parties, vacations, small kit stuff, but didn't want to compromise, so until they come out with a 24-70 2.8IS or until I get the 1DmkIII (where I can bump the ISO up to 1600-3200 for fast shutter speeds) I'm sticking with the 17-55. Also looking forward to the 60mm Macro, looking at the examples here, it looks like an amazing lens.
