Was unable find a mono cord so I got a stereo cord. Anyone know which one I should connect to the hotshoe.
(Sorry basically zero knowledge in connecting things up.)

The hotshote cable has just one white wire and bare copper wires (which I assume would be ground?)

The stereo cable I brought has a white wire, red wire and bare copper wires.

Would I be correct to say that I would connect the new white and red wires together and solder that to the position where the old white wire used to be on the hotshoe. Then thin the bare copper and connect to the same position to where the old bare copper wire was connected to.

Thanks.

That's at least how I would do it. If you check the stereo connector, you see it has three contacts. The one closest to the cable is ground, which goes to shield (the bare copper) and should be connected to the ground of the hotshoe (also the bare copper).

The other two contacts are left and right channels and are connected to the red and the white wire. Ideally you would only connect the wire which goes to the tip of the connector, just in case the mono connector shorts the middle contact against ground. If you can find out which wire (red or white) is connected to the middle contact, and the setup you described didn't work right away, it might help to leave that cable unconnected.

Discovery is not accidental. We discover only when we make ourselves ready to receive and photographers seek discovery by mastering their craft. But it begins somewhere else. It begins with daisies, kids, awful scenes, falling in love, or growing old. It begins with that which matters to you. And it ends with visual statements that express what matters to you about these things. It is not sight the camera satisfies so thoroughly, but the mind. - Christian Molidor

A stereo connector can be wired as a mono by wiring the tip(hot) and the sleeve(ground). The ring is not wired to anything. Use a continuity checker or meter to see which conductors go to the tip and sleeve and wire those.
