not sure if that is what you would call it or not, had some storms outside and wanted to see if I can catch any cloud to ground bolts, no luck with the Lightning but I took a few shots just messing with settings and upon reviewing them I noticed a red dot. I thought maybe my monitor might have a dead pixel but nope it's on the pics I took. Looked through all my pics and I only see it on pics I took outside after sundown so it's dark and shutter was open longer.

Anyone come across this issue before? My EOS 5D is under a month old

"Hot" pixel. It happens with long exposures . I don't think it's covered by warranty.

Now - a word from the experts...

There is a procedure you can use to map out or unstuck the pixel. With the lens cap or body cap on, place the camera in manual cleaning mode for about a minute or so. I'm not convinced that there is built in software that maps out the pixel as many here claim, but it does get rid if the hot pixel. I have used this trick on two different bodies successfully.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

My Rebel has a bunch of hot pixels. But, when I shoot in RAW mode, and load a file into CS2, it automatically corrects the hot pixels. Its more work but it sure makes the photos nicer.

try doing a sensor clean without touching the sensor. just set it to clean, and turn the camera off. it got rid of one of my pixels

All this does is keep the shutter open right? Will leave the lens on and try it out...

Leaving the shutter open gets rid of "stuck" pixels, not "hot" pixels. Stuck pixels are stuck on a certain color/channel, so leaving the shutter open bleaches them, causing them to become "unstuck."

Hot pixels report back more light energy than is present, which causes them to be far brighter than the other pixels around them. Leaving the shutter open doesn't fix them, because they are already bleached.

Dead pixels report no information, so leaving the shutter open does not affect them either.

And finally: The 5D has 12.8 million pixels. So, if one went bad, that means you have 99.99999218% of your total pixels working. That's pretty good.

My new 5D has a bunch and using this sensor cleaning function while having a cap on has not worked. Using the noise reduction function has worked.
