Can anyone suggest a ball head that's not terribly expensive (under $150) and will hold a 1D with a 70-200 2.8? I'm guessing that'll be my heaviest application.
Would a 486RC2 do it?
Thanks!

I have the 488RC2 and its a great head. I put it on top of a Magfibre Manfrotto and it works great. Should easily hold your combo.

Highly regarded head.

I'm just about to drop some cash on the 488RC2 due to it being recommended so many times on this forum. Although I do wonder how tightly the knob must be tightened to grip the ball, due to coming from a Benbo head which had to be tightened with gloves to get it tight enough.

I find it very sturdy when not tightened at all. You don't need to tighten it a whole lot to get it to stay put.

Disclaimer: I wouldn't leave the camera on the head when its not tightened. But it is sturdy.

No problem at all Anke.
Sounds like the 488 would be the way to go.
I'll probably leave the 486 on my monopod.
Thanks!
