AF Assist on 40D

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to use AF Assist on the 40D in AV mode (Sigma TTL compatible flash) while stopping the flash from actually firing?

I've been searching but found nothing.....and Sigma manuals are terrible.

Just a link would be great if anyone knows - thanks in advance :)

Sigma: Macro 70mm F2.8 EX DG, SIGMA 1,4X EX DG Converter, Flash EF 500 DG ST,
Canon: EF 70-200/4L, EF 50/1.4USM,50mm f/1.8 II, EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS

Ahh - worked it out if anyone is interested.

It was a bit different from the 30D...needed to disable flash from the menu option (not a custom option) on the 40D then set the custom option to use AF assist.

Maybe someone will find this useful one day when searching for the same question.
