Before leaving for Ecuador I thought "Do I really need my flash?". Only used a few times but I was glad I had it on the overcast and drizzly days in the Cloud Forest around Mindo. Unfortunately in AV mode I only had 1/200sec exposure...did my best and was happy with this. The guides assured me that Flash photography was fine with daytime animals.

Woah, cheers guys. I had the 430 EX attached and could only use 1/200 sec (think I had safety shift enabled) this is where the 5D failed me as 3fps was not enough to capture these guys, certainly not as many keepers.

I love the first shot. I really wish I lived in an area that had hummingbirds more than just during the summer.

The flash of light is what freezes the wings. You can do it with your camera.

Neilyb,

You can actually get above 1/200 shutter speed when using your flash by turning on High Speed Sync. This is only available with external flashes, and your 430ex has it. This will enable you to use much faster shutter speeds, like 1/2000, and still use your flash. You can read up on it here.

both are fantastic, but the first it is great. It is VERY VERY hard to capture these fast elusive critters.
