googled for owls in SF and got these:

There used to be a pair of owls in Bernal Heights, but they've died. There are still some owls in Kentfield, and this organization has put in nests in Ross and San Anselmo.

There's also an organization in Berkeley (of course) for the protection of barn owls, but their site didn't say where any of them are (perhaps Berkeleyites have them in a witness protection program ;))

I've seen Burrowing Owls at Coyote Hills near Fremont, and a Barn Owl at Ed Levin Park
near Milpitas. If you find any other places, I'd be interested.

You can try just west of San Jose. There have been some rare California Spotted Owls there for decades. They would be hard to find. Look for old growth forest near water. I actually saw my first owl (Spotted Owl) there as a kid.

There have been numerous reports of Great Horned Owls around and in SF.

Back when I was in grad school in Palo Alto, I used to do a lot of birding at Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve. There were always lots of Burrowing Owls, as well as tons of other birds: Northern Shrikes, Avocets, etc....

Nice thanks! I saw one while I was shooting the GG bridge in the headlands. It was night so I could see, but I saw this huge thing fly by and perch on a fence post. I wish I had my 580ex flashbang.

Haha! I guess it's legal to shoot ducks though.
