I had a chance to go look at the 40d and the 5d today. I have decided I will be getting the 40d instead of the 5d. One factor for me is that would loose a lot of focal length with the FF 5d. I have to say the 40d was Amazing. The feel of that camera was so unlike canon. It feels perfect in my hands. I don't think I will use the live view, but the camera is pretty intuitive.

I think it will be a nice step up from the rebel xt I currently own.

I made the same step, went from XT to 40D and I like it a lot..
Go for it, you’ll never regret!

Actually, it's a quite standard feel for a mid-range Canon camera, but if you've only ever used an XT then you wouldn't know any different. I stepped up from an XT to a 30D and the difference in build is quite profound.

Sounds like a good decision to me.

I had a chance to play with a friend's 40D this morning and I am very impressed with the little extras that it has over my 30D. Probably not enough to make me rush out and buy one to replace my 30D straight away, but it's definitely on my to-do list.

If you take your photography seriously, then I'd say you are overdue for an upgrade. If you do go for the 40D you will certainly not be disappointed.

I did the same...went to the local store that had both cameras... I thought I would walk out with the 5d, but chose the 40d instead.:D I really liked the feel, handling and custom functions. I also didn't want to loose the reach. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but for me it was the features of 40d that sold me.:D

It's even better to have both the 5D and the 40D.:D

Yes it is...However, my credit card is partly melted from this past year. We'll let it recoup a while and see when a 5d replacement comes out.

I will certainly agree about your assessment about the 40D being a wonderful camera. The "focal length story", on the other hand, is primarily a marketing "spin doctor" way of turning something into a "feature". I think that this is a contrived explanation that came about because the viewing angle is reduced when you crop away part of an image with an implied meaning that it is "sort of" like increasing the local length. A smaller sensor just means that it is not capturing all of the available image that is being projected by the lens. The focal length is determined by the lens only since the mounting ring to sensor distance is the same on all Canon cameras. A good way to verify this for yourself is to note that smaller sensor size does not change the LOS perspective for a particular lens. I don't view 1.6 crop factor sensors as being either a feature nor a limitation -- it is just a description of what the camera has -- the real story lies in what the camera can do with what it has -- and the 40D excels in that arena.

I wound up going with the 40D, but primarily due to financial reasons. I was leaning toward the 5D because I am mainly interested in portraiture, and some wide-angle stuff, and the low-noise/high-ISO performance was attractive. Oh yeah, and it's FF.

But, when it came down to trying to save for a 5D (or borrowing extra), or buying a 40D and some extras (I got the 40D, the BG-E2N grip, extra battery, 4GB card, Tamrac Adv. 9 backpack and a Kevlar UpStrap for less than the price of a 5D), it was a no brainer.

I don't think I'll miss the 2 extra MPs, but I did sell my Tamron 17-50mm, and I'm limited to 24mm on the wide end with my 24-70 L, but I'll suffer through that!

Congrats on joining the 40D Club!

I did the exact same thing yesterday and am enjoying it tremendously. It's also great that I can leave work soon so I can actually play with the 40D while the sun's out.

I did the same as well this week. Looking forward to tomorrow as I'm shooting on-location so the 40D will get it's grand test tomorrow. The only thing missing is that I will have to swap out the batteries in the 40D as I don't have the new grip, since the grip for the XT doesn't fit the 40D series. :S

I even love the sound of the shutter clicking on the 40D. :P

Sure it has a lot of features, but after reading the manual twice I'm STILL trying to figure them out! :/

I made that jump. Now I don't miss sport shots waiting for the buffer. Not to mention the faster burst rate, better focusing, better sensor, custom functions, less noise at high ISO, and the list goes on and on and on and....

BTW if you use 2GB cards, you better get at least 4GB cards for the 40D
Oh, the build is superior to the 300D.
