Hi, i am planning on buying a 1d mkIII sometime shortly after Christmas if all is proven to be well with the AF 'FIX'

However, i am really lost as to what lens to get.........

I currently have a 40d [and 30d] with a ef-s 17-55 2.8IS - I am selling this lens to help fund the new lens[es]. So, i am thinking of a 16-35 mkII........ The 16-35 seems like it will be just the job on the 1.6x crop of the 40d but i'm a bit worried that i will find it a bit limited as a walkaround on the 1.3x crop of the 1d. The 24-70 seems like it would be fine for me on the 1d but then that may not be wide enough on the 40d... and my bank balance definately isn't going to stretch to both the 16-35mkII AND 24-70 :(

I have considered getting the 24-70 and the 17-40 as an alternative [after rebates this combo is not far off same price as 16-35 alone] but i'm worried i'd miss not having the f2.8 on the wide zoom....

So, i'd like to know what route other users of BOTH the 1d & 20/30/40d would take/have taken - with their lens choice.......????

My current [compatible] lens line up is as follows.... 50mm f1.4 - 85mm f1.8 & 70-200mm f2.8L IS

Current gear: EOS 7D w/ BG-E7
300mm f4L IS, 70-200mm f2.8L IS II, 24-70mm f2.8L, 85mm f1.8, 1.4x mkII tc, 430ex.

I have a 24-105mm and it is great on my MK3 when I had it, it is what to do after that,?? with the UWA, that is where I am stumped I tried the Sigma 12-24mm had to send it back, but I think that is the only option.
Remember the ISO low noise is so good, to to use a F4 with IS is very usable
in the real world, I will in the end get a 16-35mm and have the 24-105, and hope someone brings out a really good UWA, though I have a 15mm canon fisheye, but I also intend to get a FF 5D MK2 when it arrives so the 16-35 will be the lens for UWA on that one :)

If you're dropping that much money on a 1D body, then you really should know what lens to pair up with it for a given situation. If you're asking for peoples advice, you're going with their preferences.

Each lens has it's own place in the pricing/performance/features grid.

Look at the lens archives for the lenses you can afford in the focal/aperture range you want and take your results from your findings there. Don't rely on people to tell you what's best, it won't make you happy.

The 24-105 range is very appealing, and 'IS' to boot - but i'm not sure that i want to lose f2.8 even though i know the iso is super nice on the mk3..... But i still need to use it on the 40d which as you know, although not bad, the iso isn't upto the M3...... If i could afford to maybe go for the 24-105 AND the 16-35 f2.8, then i'd go for it in a heartbeat!!!! Maybe i should just get the 16-35 and hold out to get the 24-105 later next year when i got some more money.......

And also a point to remember the 24-105 is a kit lens for 5D, and often gets taken out to sell body only, so quite often camera shops do sell them quite cheap un-boxed or in a plain white box. I know I got mine pretty cheap brand new from Park Cameras

Thanks for your post, the problem i'm having is i know what i want, but, it doesn't exist!!! lol

The the thing thats causing me grief is that 16 or 17-35/40mm is perfect for the 40d but the long end maybe too short for the 1d.

on the other end of the scale, i could probably live with 24mm at the wide end on the 1d but it will no doubt be too long for me on the 40d...... catch22.....

So my issue surrounds the 1.3 vs 1.6 crop factor..... So what i'm trying to figure out is what options other people chose that came up with the same conundrum.....

I am going to have to sit down at some point and look through all my photos and try and work out what focal length i most use....

Thanks again...

The 24-70 was an outstanding lens on my 1D2 - should be the same on the 1D3. For the 40D, I would say that the 17-40 would be an excellent optic, useable on the 1D3 as well. The 17-55/2.8 would be a better choice if interchangeability were not an issue. I'd prefer to be able to share the ultrawide at times.

The 24-70L is my walk-around lens on my 1D3 and my most used lens by far.

Well, i finally made a decision! I have plumped for the 24-70 for now and it should be with me end of this week/early next week.

I'm going to be waiting until the end of January/beginning February to get my replacement MKIII but after that i'll see about adding the 17-40 a little further down the line.

Good choice. I think the 24-70 is a little bit short on FF, and definitely not wide enough on 1.6 crop. But on a 1D, it's perfect. Only need the IS to be as good as the 17-55 IS on the 40D ;)

May be sometime down the road when I can finally justify buying a 1D Mk IV or something, they would have put the IS into this lens :p, even make it a cheaper kit lens. Now that's a dream. In the mean while, congratulations!
