This is going to be great especially for those who buy DSLR's as P&S camera's for vacation shots. Now they get a nice IS lens to go with the body.

I think Canon did the smart thing here...

I bought one for myself yesterday as well. I figured this is a nice upgrade to the kit lens. cheap and light. its not meant to replace any of the better lenses, but its absolutely great as a walkaround.

I felt the same way you did about the IS on this thing - its super quiet at first I thought it didnt have IS! :D

Yes good job I wasnt trying it in the store, I would have surely said this IS isnt working, can I try another copy & looked a fool ;) its so silent.

Yeah, those kit lenses have really short minimum focusing distances, which I enjoy.

Yes a 350/400D will beat ANY point & shoot when it comes to speed, low noise & general image clarity, at least now you dont have to have a huge, heavy & expensive IS lens on the end of a small lightweight body to get good results.

Yep ;)

I forgot in my original post, the MFD from Canon (about 9.8 inch) is from the sensor plane, NOT the end of the lens as I was measuring, im always forgetting this :p

That's it. I'm trading in my Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for this.

Does show quite a large degradation at f3.5 over f5.6 at 18mm rather disappointing really, other wise looks pretty good

I remember this because my Sigma can focus on things touching the front glass!

As I'm sure you know as well. You fluffed that 17-70 like it was your own son.

Does it have the same mount (i mean the same plastic efs plate) as the non is?

I wonder if d30/d60/10d users with modified kit lenses can use their modified mount on this lens.

I modified a kit lens for a friend with a 10d. Hmm, could be a possibility

Some bodies. Some primes. Some zooms. Same as everyone else.

Unfortunately yes Ed it does, however in this case it will be my brothers only lens, it will stay on his 350D all the time so should pose no problem at all.

Shame Canon use plastic mounts still, especially considering the price a mount would cost, im sure it cant add that much onto the cost of the lens.

Cant have it all I guess, there is still nothing in this price range that offers as much.

lol you remind me of my 28-135mm IS + 350D combo - that is so nose heavy, it feels like im gonna accidentally tip forward each time I shoot

hehe yeah its a similar story with my 24-105L mounted on the 350D, it looks kinda odd too.

That's what battery grips are for
