Ooo, very nice! Is that the Star of India out of San Diego?

Nice to have you aboard, John!

Thanks.

Yep, that's the Star. This was taken the very first day I had my D60 (my first DSLR). I picked it up the night before and didn't have the time to check it out fully. I stuck it in P and on large jpeg and just fired away.

I was crewman on her and other Maritime Museum ships for four years.

That would've been awesome. I've been to SD a number of times when I was in the Coast Guard, and really enjoyed looking at the Star. I've never been on, and this was a time before I was into photography. Now, of course, I'd love to spend a lot of time on her, both working and photographing.

Hey John, welcome aboard. :D

Thanks everyone...

Puddle, The only way to be able to sail on her is either by invitation or being a member of the crew. I figured the only way I was ever going to get to sail on her was to volunteer as a crewman. If you're in the SoCal area, you might want to look into it. There were a lot of people that came from other parts of the state to volunteer.

I would assume you need to be somehow qualified to be a crew member?

KIND OF A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT RE: TR.

Ignore it if you want.

The current series has been going on since late August. Probably the longest series to date, and it's been fun. While I am mostly unapologetic about the things drawn, as they were all done in fun and with little to no intended malice, I'm coming to the conclusion that I need to wrap up this series quickly.

I'm not getting pressure from anyone; you've all been very encouraging and supportive, but ever since the beginning of October, or thereabouts, POTN began an evolution, with the birthing pains having an epicenter in the Wedding Forum. The script of the current TR series seemed to escalate in pace with the spooling up of the tensions with a few of the regular members. As the "tension" mounted in the characters' lives, real tempers started to flare up between some members and the POTN Mod Squad. As our characters made their "incursion" into Weddingzakistan, the fallout over the POTN Book volume 2 came to a head.

Of course, I'm not so egotistical to think that the TR played a factor in all of this. I think, rather, that the whole thing was a sequence of ill-timed comics. At one point, I altered the script to take out wedding forum characters and substituted androgynous Lens Forum Trolls as mercenaries. However, this turned out to be a little too little, little too late. Now that the TR's are only on their site, I'm still having qualms.

Believe it or not, and contrary to my title, I try to be a nice guy. I don't want to agitate an already sensitive situation within POTN. Personally, I see what happened to the Wedding Forum to be an implosion, brought about by the attitudes of a small percentage of the regular members of that arena. To those, I have nothing to say. To the others, the ones that will have to readjust to the new territories, I want to create a strip that will not be acerbic to their funny bones.

Both Lisa and I enjoy our time on POTN, and have learned a great deal about photography as well as making good friends. We both are sincere when we talk about the importance to community, contribution and camaraderie within all of the Forums. I do not wish to have anything that would besmirched that effort. That includes the silly things that I draw.

That being said, over the course of the next weekend, I'm going to work to close out the "Adventures with Jim" series in nine strips; about three a day. You can check the TR site periodically to see what's up, as I will put them up as soon as the ink is dry, or you can wait until Sunday evening to see all nine at once.

Again, no one is saying that I have to do this, nor do I think that the TR strips have any influence in the events in POTN at all. They may reflect some of the events, but they definitely have no weight in the direction. This decision more of an "Ease of Conscious" thing for Lisa and me. Next Monday, we'll start another short series before we tackle the next big Adventure. This time, against a more distant foe.... the Nikonistas.

I would love to. It's always been a dream of mine to work on a tall ship. However, the chances of me getting enough time off and being in SoCal are very slim. :(

Thanks, Crissa. With the WF sorta spread out, and with their chat thread right "next door" to us, I don't want to create awkward moments with the new guests just because of the stupid stuff that I draw.

Down with the Nikonistas, those dirty low down, no good for nothing scoundrels. :D :p

Dan, I had all the same thoughts rolling around in me wee noggin' regarding the current strip, so I must say that this is no surprise at all. I would say it is the right thing to do to in spite of recent developments on this site. Given time things will come around to normal around here with regards to the issues of late regarding the WF, and the ones remaining will most likely be able to read back on this TR series and get a chuckle outta it.

As long as you keep producing the TR's, you will have a great bunch of devoted fans, despite the adventure that unfolds. :)

All you need is the dedication to become a crewman and the necessary time (two Sundays a month). Of course, there are some other minor requirements, like haveing medical insurance and becoming a member of the museum. They will actually train you for sailing the ship. It entails a commitment, because you won't get to sail right away. The three tall ships usually sail annually and the sail crew is chosen from the members of the maintenance crew.
